The trails are lovely, with historic totems and a visitor center. The Totem trail has waterfront views and close-up looks at the namesake totems. Take time to walk around, but keep an eye on your surroundings. We almost came up on a local 🐻 on the Russian memorial trail.

Totem Square Park is a charming place in Sitka, with a lot of history and a chance to connect with Alaska’s cultural heritage. The carved totem poles are the main draw. Each represents a different clan and story from Tlingit culture, and the carvings offer a glimpse into local Native Alaskan traditions and beliefs. There are benches and green spaces, too, making it a nice spot for a stroll or some quiet time away from busy downtown. It’s also near other Sitka attractions, so it fits easily into a visit around the area.

As you keep walking along the sea walk, there’s a playground for kids. It’s a nice little town, and you learn about this historical indigenous land.

The waterfront setting is lovely, with the surrounding scenery and fresh Alaskan air. I enjoyed taking photos of the totems against that backdrop, then wandering around the square. It’s also quiet enough to sit for a while and reflect. Up close, the carvings tell stories tied to the Tlingit people and the area’s history, so there’s plenty to learn as well as admire. Sitka Totem Square is a beautiful stop in Sitka, whether you’re interested in the history or just want some peaceful time outdoors.

There are benches, paths, a neatly mowed lawn, sea walls, and the ocean in the background, so it’s a pleasant little park to pause in, relax, take pictures, or watch people. The downtown is easy to explore on foot, and the paved streets give you a local view of the city as you pass other sights, including the harbor, the Russian Bishop’s house, and St. Michael’s Orthodox Cathedral. The totem pole here has a double-headed eagle and is a sign of Sitka’s Russian heritage. It’s accompanied by a Russian cannon and three recovered anchors. Tourists arriving on Alaska cruises often stop here while walking through historic downtown.
