We won't stay again. At $545 for one night, the room and shared areas were clean, but the accommodations felt mediocre for the price, and the building's exterior didn't impress me. The high reviews had set my expectations much higher. We were in the heart of Solvang, which was very walkable, but there weren't the luxurious extras or special touches I'd hoped for at the inflated Valentine's Day rate. Even a complimentary bottle of something or a box of treats would have been nice. Communication was frustrating too. The host was hard to reach, the check-in email went to an incorrectly transcribed address, and although a 1 p.m. early check-in had been promised, it wasn't honored. I had to call several times that day to get the entry code. We also weren't told that the rooms lacked central heating and air conditioning. The windows open, but the portable AC unit meant ours couldn't be shut. On a chilly 45-degree evening we used a portable heater, and with the window still open, we heard the neighboring guest snore all night. They may have had their window open too.

The room and bathroom were huge, spotless, and I’d happily stay again. It was my first hotel stay with no visible staff, and it worked out great. One useful thing to know: the keypad door doesn't lock itself when it closes, so you have to lock it when you leave. A clearly placed note about that would help.

The room was nice, but the service was awful. Our room was several floors up, and the only working elevator was broken when we arrived. We had a stroller, several suitcases, and a travel crib, yet the invisible staff offered no solution or even an apology for the major hassle. When I asked when the elevator would be fixed, they couldn't give me any guidance. I wouldn't recommend staying here.

I had to cancel my reservation for reasons that had nothing to do with the hotel, so I haven't actually stayed there. This is about Lolita, who went above and beyond helping me with Booking.com. Even after she knew I'd canceled, she stayed patient and helpful. I hope I can visit the property another time. And I won't book through booking.com again.

I stayed with my adult kids, and we were given rooms in the left wing. They were gorgeous, roomy, distinctive, and clearly designed with care. From there we could step into a library and shared sitting area that felt like our own living room, almost like having a private mansion. The location was hard to beat, and we walked to everything we had planned. Five stars all the way!
