The spa treatments were very good, and we both enjoyed them. The spa grounds themselves, though, date back to 1981 and are showing their age. We also ate at the on-site restaurant. We each ordered the crab pasta special, a $40 bowl that tasted funny and was so overpriced I ate less than a third. Service there was okay, not great. We paid well over $1,000 a night for the Presidential Suite this past weekend. I hadn’t visited in several years, and the property looked old and dated as soon as I arrived. The suite felt dated too, and it was on the ground floor with another suite or room above it. Heavy footsteps overhead went on nearly all night, like Godzilla was staying upstairs. I stay in five-star hotels often and don’t mind the cost, but this property didn’t meet my standards for a five-star stay. I don’t like leaving negative reviews, but these are my honest responses. We were disappointed.
Matt and Craig at the valet went above and beyond to make sure my wife and I were comfortable. She uses a wheelchair, and they made everything pleasant. The spa staff were wonderful too, including the woman who gave me a watsu massage. Housekeeping responded right away, and everything felt perfect. Even if it rained, umbrellas were easy to find in the rooms, lobbies, spa, and valet area. It was such a relaxing stay, with everything at my fingertips. We could order food from places around the area, including the bath house, and have it delivered. My neck had been aching for weeks, but it hasn’t hurt since I got into the mineral-infused jacuzzi. This is the best hotel I’ve ever stayed at.
We’ve gone to the Fairmont Spa twice for family birthdays, first for my mom in early January, then my aunt in February. It’s such a good winter day out, and I love the reset it gives me. Afterward, we went to El Molino Central across the street, and I’m already wondering whose March birthday will bring us back. You don’t need to stay at the hotel for the day pass to feel worth every penny. Check-in was seamless, and the locker rooms had easy lockers, plush robes, slippers, and luxurious bath products. Outside there are two large heated pools at different temperatures, plus a tucked-away hot tub in the far corner for a quieter soak. Indoors, there are two more hot tubs, a spacious sauna, a steam room, and showers with a signature scrub. If the weather turns, there are comfortable indoor lounging spots, including dreamy zero-gravity chairs. We chose bottle service both visits, which made the day feel extra special. I didn’t order food, but the portions I saw looked generous and the prices seemed fair for a luxury resort. The staff are exceptionally well trained, and a few people went above and beyond both times. On our second visit we brought cash so we could tip appropriately. For a quiet, ultra-peaceful visit, I’d skip Saturday. Our first trip was on a Sunday and felt very zen. The Saturday visit brought larger birthday groups, and some guests were there to party. It got loud around the hot tub and indoors. That’s out of the Fairmont’s control, but it’s good to know depending on the atmosphere you want. Parking is validated for a set amount of time, then costs around $3 an hour. It’s easy and convenient. I can’t wait to come back.
The grounds are beautifully kept, and the staff are kind, easy to talk with, and accommodating. I’ve stayed several times and got upgraded each time through Amex. The rooms are clean and spacious, and I love the Le Labo Rose 31 bath products. At check-in they give you sparkling wine, with a bottle of local red wine and seasonal chocolates in the room. Breakfast at Santé is delicious, and 38° N is a good spot for a snack. I especially like the fig and arugula pizza, though sadly it’s seasonal. There’s also a charming photo booth on the property that made it fun to capture memories. This place feels like Sonoma to me: peaceful, quiet, and elegant. I hope to return soon.
I only wish we’d booked a longer stay at The Fairmont Sonoma. From the driveway, the property was beautiful, with cared-for landscaping, fountains, and flowers in bloom. The valet greeted us with a smile, helped unload our bags, and explained the parking options. At check-in, Alyssa welcomed us, poured complimentary sparkling wine, walked us through the property, and answered all our questions. Our room had a lovely garden and tree view, a spacious bathroom, and complimentary wine from a local winery. We also enjoyed complimentary wine tasting in the gorgeous lobby before exploring the grounds. Everyone we passed greeted us and asked how the stay was going. At 38 NORTH BAR, Cassius knew the menu and wine list well. He listened to what we liked, made specific recommendations, and gave us next-level service with a big smile. The food was incredible and the wine selection was large. Each evening we used the natural pool, which stayed warm and inviting even in cold, rainy weather. Room service came quickly with a smile, and the fresh, delicious food arrived picnic style, which was so quaint. Casey at the concierge desk was extremely helpful when we asked about the area. She gave us maps, personalized ideas, discount vouchers, and helped us use the free car service into town. Matt and Christian drove us in the Fairmont car, shared local history, and were cheerful. After wine tasting and exploring downtown Sonoma, we were picked up soon after requesting a ride. That convenience was a highlight. On our last morning, breakfast at Saunte was probably the best hotel breakfast we’ve had. Ana was friendly and the bright, clean restaurant had impeccable service. She brought out their famous banana bread, which I talked about all the way home. The food was incredible. The bellmen and housekeeping team also handled our special requests quickly and helped the stay go smoothly. We can’t wait to return for much longer. Book it, you won’t be disappointed.
