Motel 6 South Gate, CA

The room itself wasn’t the problem for me, it was the morning front desk employee, who was passive-aggressive and rude. My boyfriend and I arrived Saturday and left this morning. He handled checkout, which seemed like a simple drop-off. No one was at check-in, so he left the key by the window while warming up his food. When the employee came in and asked for the key, he explained where he’d left it. She raised her voice and kept asking where it was, as if he were dumb, even though it was right there. He pointed her to it again, and it was exactly where we’d left it. There was no reason to get feisty. Later, on our way to the next destination, we realized we’d forgotten to pick up our deposit. It was our mistake, and I wasn’t blaming the employee. I called the lobby to say we’d checked out and hadn’t gotten it, and she interrupted before I’d finished to say we were supposed to come get it and ask whether we had. I tried to explain that I was just letting her know we’d come back for it, but she cut me off again and said she’d been about to tell me that if I’d let her finish. I hung up. There was no point arguing with a brick wall. They need better hotel staff; there’s no need to act like a spoiled little girl.

The women working here helped make the stay feel safe and comfortable. Maggie was especially accommodating and so helpful, even catching and sorting out issues I’d caused. We had a very satisfactory experience. Thanks again, and love from Canada!

The noise made restful sleep impossible. Traffic went by at all hours, and I could hear water through the walls. Our room was filthy, but when I told the front clerk Maggie and asked to switch rooms, she looked at me like I was crazy and quickly said they were full. The bed against the wall felt like sleeping on the floor, the mattress seemed ancient, and the towels were badly stained. I had to ask three times before I got anything decent. On top of all that, I noticed my car tags were missing at checkout. The night clerk also had to tell random men to leave the property the night I came back to the room with my two daughters. It didn’t feel safe at all. I’d give this place zero stars if I could.

There’s lots to do nearby, and the location feels safe and clean. There’s even an amazing coffee shop 20 feet from the entrance. I’ll definitely use this as a stop on my West Coast trips.
