Hampton Inn South Hill

Check-in was warm and friendly, though whether that affected our room assignment is anybody’s guess. The room was surprisingly spacious, with hardwood-style flooring, a kitchenette with fridge and microwave, and a separate hallway. It felt more like an extended-stay setup than an overnight stop, almost big enough for a TED Talk. The mattress was solid and supportive, and the shower pressure and hot water were both acceptable, nothing extreme. The little things were less successful. The faucet sat too far back from the sink, so water didn’t land neatly in the basin. The towels were a 6 on my zero-to-Brillo-Pad scale, smaller than at our earlier stops and exfoliating enough to wake you up. I can only guess travelers shrink as we head north. Pillows were the real failure: they flattened fast. If you’re picky about pillows and have room in your luggage, bring your own vacuum-sealed one. We’re traveling light, so that wasn’t an option. Breakfast was the surprise. We expected the usual chain lineup but got plant-based sausage, rubbery egg discs, and Hampton-branded waffles. Luckily I had leftover Chicken Fried Chicken from Cracker Barrel the night before and improvised chicken and waffles. Adapt and overcome. Jen ate enough and carried on like a champ. This take is based on my very controlled, peer-reviewed sample of three Hampton Inn stays during a six-state and one-District crash-pad tour. Beds are comfy, pillows are a systematic failure.
