Hampton Inn Detroit/Southgate

Breakfast here was a little better than adequate. I had a premade omelet, a couple slices of processed ham, and pretty good home fries. The usual Hampton spread includes a few hot options, breads and bagels with spreads, hard-boiled eggs, waffles, yogurt, oatmeal, fruit, pastries, muffins, juice, coffee, and milk. This location also had almond milk. The woman at the desk in the morning was gracious and helped me back into our room to get our dinner leftovers. We stayed nearby after a nice meal at Leonardo's, since we were driving a friend to the Detroit airport for an early flight. The guy at the desk went out of his way to put our rooms next to each other, even though we would have been fine either way. Our king suite had a weird layout. The bed faced sideways toward the window, with a couch between them that I think pulled out. There was no side or coffee table for the couch, so I dragged over the round table that stood in place of a desk to set down my drink. I used the upholstered office chair as an ottoman. The furniture didn’t match in appearance or function. There was a huge wall mounted TV, and we watched Clueless. The bed and pillows were comfy, as they usually are at Hamptons, and I slept so soundly my wife had to nudge me when the alarm went off. The bathroom was very clean, the towels were neatly arranged, and the water pressure was good enough to rinse shampoo out of my thick hair. Really nice. We always like a Hampton, and this one’s a keeper.

Five of my eight trips here, I’ve unplugged the TV for the whole week because it keeps turning itself back on in the middle of the night. I’m no AV technician, but that seems like a system flaw, and it cost this place a star. I’ve spent two disjointed months here for work over the years, and the people are what make the hotel. The morning receptionist is a delight, Adrian is always busy keeping breakfast going, and housekeeping gets the rooms ready to the same standard every time. They do a lot for guests’ comfort, and Hampton wouldn’t be Hampton without them. Treat them right.

Felicia was wonderful to work with while arranging our wedding room block and shuttle. The shuttle driver was great, too, and everyone got safely to and from the reception. Hotel service was great, the staff were all great, and the rooms were comfortable and clean.

The night shift was great. My room had no heat, and they moved me to another one without hesitation. The morning shift was a different story. The staff were rude and showed no hospitality, especially the breakfast attendant. He snapped at us about the breakfast area being closed instead of politely explaining that it had closed and asking us not to go in. He had an attitude right away. I’d heard that the morning staff treated certain people that way, but I gave them the benefit of the doubt. What I was told turned out to match my experience. When we left at 10:47am, I just dropped off my keys and left. I don’t recommend this location in the morning, and I won’t be back. If I could, I’d give it no stars.
