The staff tried their best to make the stay pleasant, but the location means I wouldn’t come back. We stayed on a rainy Wednesday in March, and there was screaming from the two frat houses across the street until well after midnight. I’d requested a higher floor to avoid noise, but the bedroom window wouldn’t shut completely. I finally fell asleep around 2 a.m., then garbage trucks came down the alley around 6:40. The hotel itself was clean, near shops and restaurants, and the area seemed safe. The noise was the main problem. If it was that loud in March, I can’t imagine it in warmer weather.
Friday morning, there was no water from the shower or taps. I called the front desk and let it ring for five minutes, but nobody answered. If there’s no one in the building to pick up, the place is effectively useless. Terrible experience, and I won’t stay again. Getting there was already a mess for a business trip. Google Maps directed me to the wrong garage, and in bad weather you’re left hauling bags a block and a half. The noise was bad too: drunk people shouting in the alley woke me around 1 a.m., even from the fifth floor. The soundproofing needs work. Room service was good on the first day, then got worse each day. The restaurant is basically bar food, fine if you’re starving late at night, but it didn’t feel like Hilton quality. The night bartender was just rude and acted like guests were a bother.
The location by itself is fantastic. My room was clean and comfortable, the lobby was nice, and the front desk staff were great. I’m not sure what else people expect, honestly. I don’t get the negative reviews.
The night manager with glasses said I could leave my car parked out front overnight when I checked in late. In the morning, I found a parking ticket. When I showed it to the morning manager, also wearing glasses, he gave me more attitude than I’ve ever had from a Hilton employee. He made me feel like an idiot for following what his coworker had told me, seemed pleased to do it, and offered no solution beyond making me feel stupid. I had to call the hotel twenty minutes later to get a solution. That guy needs an attitude adjustment, and the night manager needs to stop telling people overnight parking out front is okay.
We booked the Scholar for our wedding weekend, both for getting ready and the wedding night, and had our out-of-town guests stay there too. It worked out really well. My suite had plenty of room for four girls to get ready with hair and makeup, and it was clean, with a full-size fridge and stove. I’m local, so I know downtown can get noisy at night. A white noise app can help. The location is wonderful, and it was a great place for the weekend.
