The hotel had a relaxed, home-like feel, and getting around was easy with shops, restaurants, and the highway nearby. Parking was straightforward, too. My room was spacious and clean, with a comfortable bed and a handy kitchenette. From arrival through checkout, the staff were professional, welcoming, and ready to help. It was quiet and felt safe during my visit. I’d gladly come back to Candlewood Suites Newport News/Yorktown by IHG, whether for a short trip or a longer stay.

The location made things easy, with pretty much everything we needed close by, even without a car. We were there for an extended stay, and Abby, Lea, and Azaria were wonderful. They were always friendly and polite, quick to help, and made us feel welcome and at ease.

We booked a business suite for the kitchen, but it was barely equipped. There weren’t enough utensils for three people, no cutting board or bowls, and the knives were dull. I ended up tossing a salad in a spaghetti pot. We also had to keep asking the front desk for basics like trash bags and dishwasher tabs, and leave our own garbage in the hallway. No one had mentioned that rooms are serviced only once a week. Laundry was another problem, with just two washers and dryers for the whole hotel, and the snack pantry’s fresh food fridge was empty. The room itself felt unhygienic. There was a strong dusty, moldy smell that never cleared, dirty carpets, gum residue on the armchair, white marks on the couch, and curtains that looked like they hadn’t been washed in years. We saw staff spray liquid on hallway carpets, but there was no deep cleaning, which may explain the odor. We only stayed because we had already booked an extra room for our baby. It felt like a last resort, and I wouldn’t return.

It’s a decent hotel on a nice property. There’s a covered grill area with two nice gas grills and plenty of space for pups to exercise. The front desk staff could’ve been friendlier, though. Of the four people at the counter, only one greeted me. The others just looked over or said something while waiting for me to speak first.
