Stepping outside puts you right on the Plaza, with lots of places to eat and shop nearby. The staff were friendly and helpful, and the rooms were adequate. It’s a comfortable, lived-in historic hotel, so don’t expect luxury. I’m grateful I got to enjoy the history and arts just by walking out the front door, and I’d recommend it.

The room was clean and pleasant, and I checked out the display of DH Lawrence paintings and listened to the 10 minute audio about him. He seemed like an odd guy, but it was interesting. We were facing the Plaza, where traffic and police cars were loud, though things settled down some later. I couldn’t get the wi-fi working in our room, and the person at the front desk wasn’t much help. It was okay for the night.

Hotel La Fonda de Taos has a lovely old fashioned feel, and I felt transported to a more gracious, enchanting era as soon as I left the historic Plaza and entered the lobby. The location is hard to beat, right on the Taos Plaza and just seconds from galleries, shops, and restaurants. Even with all that activity nearby, the hotel felt like a quiet adobe retreat, a serene sanctuary from the world.

There are plenty of galleries and stores nearby, and the hotel itself was okay, just not great. The problem is the noise. Starting around 9:00pm, locals rev their engines on the plaza until sometime 2:00am. I couldn’t sleep without ear plugs, and a room facing the plaza was unbearable. Apparently Taos doesn’t have a noise ordinance, but it needs one. I wish the local car culture would grow up and stop revving all night and drag racing in the plaza.

Our group had a great time, and I hope to return soon. The property has a clean, rustic 200 year-old charm, and the staff were very friendly and accommodating with our different needs. We could walk everywhere, and the second-floor lounge was a wonderful place to gather with family and friends. We also met interesting people from all over.
