The shower was hot with good pressure, the grounds looked lovely, and the staff were friendly and helpful. The room looked nice too, and $90 felt reasonable enough for a late evening walk-in, though it wasn’t a great rate. But we found a bedbug on the pillow late at night. With no night manager in sight, we put our things in the bathtub and tried to manage until morning, since the alternative was our car full of belongings. After spending the night getting bitten, we told the front desk. They said someone would check the room, but an hour and a half later, at 11 when checkout was, nobody had come. We weren’t offered compensation, though I didn’t ask or expect it since I avoid confrontation. The hot tub wasn’t working, and another review said it had been out for over a year. Bedbugs can happen anywhere, but this experience means we’ll choose another hotel next time. The Sun God Lodge advertises Great Rates and Clean Rooms on its sign, a hot tub online, and the usual basics of a motel: a bed and a hot shower. Only the shower held up.

I used to stay here many times and had pleasant visits, but I won’t be coming back to Taos and staying here now. From the street it looks abandoned, with tall weeds, a faded sign, and no lights on it. The place is in serious disrepair. The hot tub and ice machine don’t work and don’t seem to be on anyone’s repair list. Our shower curtain was torn and barely attached, while the water temperature and pressure shifted so much the shower was almost useless. The blinds were cheap and wouldn’t close all the way, so there wasn’t full privacy. They said the pet fee had to be paid in cash, even though friends who checked in right before us paid by card. The room was clean and decent for the price, and the employees were friendly. That’s where the positives stop.

The outdoor grass area was lovely, with a breeze and nice spots to sit and eat. Inside, my room was comfortable and peaceful, and I really liked the hand-painted-looking tile around the sink and shower. The place has that Southwestern, almost B&B feel, while costing the same as hotel 6. I appreciated the adobe style without the $$$$ price tag. The staff made me feel very welcome, especially Rubin, who was so kind. I can’t remember the young man’s name, the one who helped me from Colorado, but he was a gem too. It was a wonderful way to finish my vacation.

We only came back because everywhere else was full, and I can’t recommend this place. The hot tub and pool have been broken for over a year. After skiing, we couldn’t get a proper hot shower either. With the hot tap fully on, the water might get just warm enough for a quick shower. We had one washcloth and it had blood on it. There was black hair in the tub, though neither of us has long black hair, and water caps were left on the floor, so it didn’t look like anyone had vacuumed. I can only hope the sheets were clean. We tried calling the front desk from the room, but the plugged-in phone had no dial tone. Several calls from our cell phones went unanswered too, and nobody returned our message. I wouldn’t recommend this place to my dogs.

The room looks like it was recently redone from top to bottom, with fresh carpet, paint, and bathroom tile. Everything was spotless, and the staff were friendly and helpful. We’d just checked in, but the newer section in back was already nice and quiet, with very little road noise. That’s a real plus compared with the hotels along the main drag. For one of the least expensive motels in town, it was much better than I expected. I’ll stay here again when I’m back in Taos.
