The room was so disappointing that I won’t stay here again. It had an old, musty smell and very little of what you’d expect in a typical room: no bar soap, just two towels, one travel shampoo, and one lotion. That’s a challenge when there’s more than one guest. The sheets were stained, and baking soda along the floor edges looked like it had been left there after an attempt to cover the carpet smell. The shower handle came off when I turned it, water pressure was low, and there was no floor mat or towels for the floor. If I could give a negative rating, I would.

The front desk staff were very friendly, and they respected my do not disturb sign, which I appreciated. The location was ideal for visiting a friend finishing her PhD at ASU, and the stay was affordable. My room was clean, with what seemed like recently updated linens and supportive pillows, a welcome change from the too-soft ones in many hotels. The fridge was a good size, and there was a microwave. I didn’t use the pool, but it looked clean. I skipped breakfast because there’s a really good breakfast place within walking distance. One lamp and the hair dryer didn’t work. It wasn’t a big problem for me, but those should be fixed.

For the price, the value is surprisingly strong, though this isn’t a destination resort, even with the nice pool and lots of palm trees. The location is great and the staff are friendly. One unusual situation involved a woman who thought her long-lost children were locked in my room, and the staff handled it nicely with help from the police. The room was otherwise clean, though there was gum on the A/C unit and cockroaches in the bathroom. Breakfast was minimal, but honestly, you probably wouldn’t make yourself anything better if you had to do it yourself.

A holiday weekend left me stranded after I got several flat tires while traveling on Easter, and no tire shops were open. The manager worked with me on the length of the stay while I tried to find two new tires for my older car and a place open to repair it. I didn’t have a credit card, and there were only a few rooms left, so I got a prepaid debit card at a gas station to hold the reservation. I appreciated that they honored my Triple A discount, since the tow and tires had already stretched my budget, and the rate was good. I booked by phone, and the clerk was friendly and helpful. I was glad they let me use the prepaid card, though I wish Super 8 didn’t require a cash deposit for several-day stays and a card for reservations. I tend to choose Motel 6 because I can pay cash up front, but Super 8 has better amenities. The clean, spacious room had two queen beds, fresh crisp sheets, a refrigerator, coffee maker, microwave, Internet, and Direct TV. I also liked the continental breakfast, lobby seating, business area, and dining space. Staff brought extra towels and left me alone when I was sick and wanted quiet. The location was quiet despite being in the busy part of town near ASU. I enjoyed paying cash face to face for the room. I wish there had been a washer and dryer, as other Super 8s I’ve used have them, and my second-floor room’s tub had no stopper. It’s an older property outside, but nicely maintained and renovated inside.

It’s the best inexpensive motel I’ve stayed in, and the only place I’ve chosen in Tempe for years. The pool and hot tub area are always clean and looked after, and the employees know the area and are helpful and kind. The beds are comfortable, the place is consistently clean, and the continental breakfast is good. There’s plenty within walking distance, including public transit.
