The maid I spoke with was polite and helpful, but the front desk was no help at all. I complained three times over two hours about people partying in rooms until after 2:30 a.m., and lost five hours of sleep. Around 1:30 a.m. they offered to move me away from some of the party rooms. Staff admitted some of the people weren’t hotel guests, and seemed too timid to stop them, even though they said this broke hotel policy. The desk boy offered a free breakfast for my lost sleep, but it turned out to be a $20 coupon toward breakfast, which is already free. He also wouldn’t connect me with management. I stay in Topeka often, but I won’t stay here again. Breakfast was poor: the bacon was only partly cooked, the sausage was partly cooked and tasted old, the eggs were watery and milky, and the biscuits were cool and bland. The sealed milk cartons were good. I also had a sore throat the day after swimming. The pool was packed with kids, and I saw lots of kids being dropped off to swim. The motel had also booked a wedding dance and a reunion.

The in-hotel event food was another letdown during our three-day stay. We got burnt popcorn, cookies from a bad recipe that looked like cupcakes and tasted awful, and bread for sandwiches at lunch that was frozen solid. When the first tray was empty, they left it that way with people still waiting in line. The server eventually brought another loaf and said he’d hoped not to open another bag. That bread was frozen too. I also found the room unbearably hot and humid. During “heater season,” the thermostat seemed like a nice touch at first, but it only worked as a heater. The room never dropped below 70. When I called, they told me to turn off the thermostat, saying that was all I could do and apologizing that the room was too hot. This is a “Holidome” without exterior windows. I like turning on the A/C and getting under lots of covers, but I was lying there with all the covers off, in stale, humid air, with no A/C option. I called the desk again and heard that some rooms are too hot and some too cold. They seemed resigned to the poor room climate. Maybe they should fix that. In the meantime, stay in a modern hotel with actual A/C.

There were dirty linens piled in the hallway, fruit flies in the dining area, and rat traps outside. Then I found a large cockroach in my bathroom, which was the last straw. The hotel was so disgusting that I left a day early. I wouldn’t wish this place on my worst enemy.

I stay here several times a year because the staff are always friendly and the rooms are consistently clean. I wouldn’t choose anywhere else.
