Cobblestone Hotel and Suites Torrington

We wished we could have stayed at this hotel at every stop on our drive from Denver to South Dakota. It was meant to be just a quick overnight break, but the staff and amenities surprised us. Our room had a separate bedroom and living space, a full-size refrigerator, cooktop, microwave, and real dishes. There was even a little store and a happy hour bar. Breakfast was good and helped us get back on the road. The price was very reasonable for what they offered. Highly recommend.

The room was plain, the beds creaked whenever we moved, and it wasn’t worth $180 or $130 a night. We came to Torrington from NE SD after a nine-hour drive for a family emergency. A relative had suggested this motel and said it was about $80 a night. Online, we saw a rate of $77, but at check-in we were charged $180 for a basic room with two queen beds. The clerk called it their “best rate” and said we had to book online to get the advertised price. She got crabby when we paid cash and huffed about needing a card for the cash payment. We needed a second night and booked online, but were still charged $130. On Monday, after showering, we came down at 6:05 a.m. to find rough towels and other guests waiting because the lounge doors were locked. They were out of yogurt and milk, and the juice machine didn’t work. If you have to stay here in a pinch like we did, call ahead about the rates. Please make the rates match the advertised price.

We pulled in during the middle of the night on our trip from SD to NM. The hotel was very clean and well maintained, and we didn’t hear our neighbors through the walls. The beds were comfortable, too. Everyone we met was friendly, including Elsie, who checked us in late, and the staff handling continental breakfast. Highly recommend!

There were two TVs in the room, but only one remote, so they ended up showing the same thing in a strange synchronized routine. The bed sagged and creaked with every movement, making sleep nearly impossible. Towels were plentiful, but so small and thin that drying off felt like rubbing with rough sandpaper. The shower water left a slippery film on my skin and made the tub feel like a skating rink, so getting out took care. The room was spacious, but smelled like a mix of locker room, wet dog, and stale cigarette smoke. I can’t figure out how this hotel got a 4.5-star rating.
