We stayed in February with our three kids, ages 9, 7, and 5, in the Sonoran suite. It had a king bed, a foldout queen couch, and a rollaway bed, so all five of us fit. There was room for everyone to have some privacy, plus plenty of closet and dresser space. The mini fridge and big table were handy for a simple breakfast like yogurt and cereal, so we didn’t have to eat out. The room was comfortable, and the beds were comfy. The Catalina Foothills felt safe and tucked away, while still being an easy drive to shops, restaurants, hiking, and downtown. Downtown Tucson didn’t feel very family friendly, so I’m glad we stayed a little outside the city. There’s a lot of southwestern charm here, and it worked well for our family. We swam most days at the pool and hot tub at Rincon. They’re small, but nice when it’s not crowded, and the heated water was tolerable even on chilly days. The little gym has weights, treadmills, staircases, and an elliptical, with a nice view of the pool and mountains. We had a great time and would highly recommend it for families.
The one downside was hearing the groundskeepers start up the leaf blower around 7:30 or 8 in the morning. I was hoping to sleep in on vacation. Otherwise, the service was fantastic, the resort amenities were great, and I loved watching the sunsets in such a gorgeous, peaceful spot.
Even the lower-end rooms here are roomy and comfortable, and the historic property has a cozy, timeless feel. It’s one of my favorite places in Tucson. The staff are always top notch, and it’s a great place to gather, even if you’re just stopping at the restaurant or bar for a quick drink. I recommend it whenever I can.
The texting service was convenient, and housekeeping kept our spacious, comfortable room clean. We liked the Sonoran King room and its view of nature. The grounds are lovely, and we’d stay again despite a few issues. We were a little annoyed to find a golf course in the view, since that wasn’t mentioned and we booked this hotel to avoid a golf-centered resort. It turned out to be quiet and fine. The property feels historic, sometimes in a good way and sometimes a bit worn, though most things are well maintained. The complimentary morning coffee was great, but I wish there were quicker choices for breakfast or light bites, like a cafe for coffee or a smoothie, or something before a hike. Terraza’s interior could use some attention, and the restaurants were just okay. The beds and pillows were uncomfortable and could use an update. Most of the staff were good, but a couple of people weren’t helpful or didn’t seem to know what was going on. They didn’t seem eager to orient visitors to Tucson or things to do, though it was easy enough to figure out. The location is great if you have a car, with short drives to hiking, restaurants, and downtown.
We chose Hacienda Del Sol for our brief honeymoon after seeing its online reviews and ratings. We’d had The Grill on our map for a while, and we couldn’t be happier with our stay. We booked a Mountain View room, which was absolutely worth it, and stayed Tuesday night through Thursday morning in mid-November. Maybe that’s why it wasn’t busy, which we loved. We enjoyed as much of the property as we could and wished we’d stayed longer. We had two breakfasts and a dinner at The Grill, and both the food and service were very good. The gift shop was expensive but neat, and the couples massage at the spa was the best spa experience I’ve had to date. One night, we had the pool and hot tub closest to our room to ourselves. It was a beautiful, crisp evening, with a perfectly warm hot tub and an incredible view of the night sky. The only thing we weren’t thrilled about was the firm mattress. We didn’t sleep well the first night, but adjusted and did fine for the rest of our stay. I can’t stop telling people about the place, and we already miss it. We hope to make a regular tradition of coming back when we can, maybe even visiting The Grill, which is open to the public, monthly and going to the spa in between.
