Robert is running this unique lodge now and has plenty of stories about its history. It's a great stop if you enjoy Route 66. The rooms keep their period style, right down to an old rotary dial phone. The same woman owned Blue Swallow for 40 years and kept it in a 40s-50s look. Hail damaged the beautiful neon two years ago, but it's been replaced and looks magnificent. There's no shared breakfast, though coffee and snack bars are available.

I've stayed here three times now, and it's still my favorite place on Route 66. Rob and Dawn are hands-on, excellent hosts, and the rooms are always clean with a real throwback feel. The neon looks great. After dinner, I enjoy seeing other guests come out to visit and listen to the music. Rob also makes a great cup of coffee.

The owners gave me useful travel advice and recommended another motel in West New Mexico for my next night's stop. There's good coffee waiting in the morning, too. Blue Swallow has the feel of stepping into a time machine, with period furniture, lighting, and working rotary phones, but it also has modern basics like wi-fi, TV, laundry, a microwave, and a fridge in the rooms or lounge. It's a beautiful motel, and you can see how much the owners care about it. Come for the neon and stay for the hospitality.

Robert and Dawn are doing wonderful things with The Blue Swallow Motel, and the vintage atmosphere was just right. We stayed in room #1 during a two-week road trip that included parts of old Route 66 and some National Parks. Thinking about all the people who'd stayed in that room, and the hopes and dreams they carried on the road, was quite enticing. Thank you, Blue Swallow. To quote Jack Kerouac, “So shut up, live, travel, adventure, bless, and don't be sorry”.

Blue Swallow is a gem, really comfortable and so well preserved. We enjoyed our stay and will make it our regular stop on future long drives out West.
