Quality Inn Upper Sandusky

It’s a shame to see how much this place has declined over the past few years. My wife and I have stayed here several times because few places still offer rooms with smoking and jacuzzi tubs, but we’ll probably wait a while before coming back. The room smelled, the bathtub was filthy, and the bedding and mattress were stained. Mold was visible where the carpet by the window was pulling away from the wall. The door was broken and looked as if it had been kicked in before. There were no extra blankets. At check-in, the front desk guy acted like he hated life and like I was a nuisance. This could be a really nice place if the establishment took better care of it.

For under $100, this was the best hotel we’ve found in the last six to eight stays, maybe the best in two or three years. The bed, room, and bathroom were clean, and there’s a fridge, microwave, working TV, luggage carts, a mirrored closet, and a full-length mirror on the wall. Breakfast runs from 6-9am, with eggs, sausage, waffles, and cereal, so I’m looking forward to it. The hot water took some figuring out: turn the single knob right until it points down, then bring it back up on the right to get the temperature you want.

We were there on a recruiting trip with my daughter. The beds were fine and the room was mostly clean, and check-in was quick. But when she pulled back the covers in our double room, there were big cracker-like chunks under the sheet, so it looked like the bed hadn’t been changed. There was mold on the lampshade, and the thick curtains didn’t cover the window, leaving parking-lot light shining into the room all night. The breakfast was average: the waffles and bagel were good, but the juice machine only had apple juice and the wrapped fruit we took was rotten. The front desk worker seemed like he’d rather be somewhere else.

The staff were pleasant, and the room was quiet. I appreciated having cable TV, and there’s an indoor pool, though I didn’t use it. A McDonald’s and Pilot travel stop share the lot. Getting around was tough, with little to do nearby and no Lyft, Uber, working taxi service, or hotel shuttle. Inside, the hallways and room were very dark, and the main room light fixture was missing, leaving only lamps. I didn’t want to touch anything past the door handle, but I did. It was accommodating for what it was.
