The housekeeper was the only good part of this stay. He brought me towels when he arrived, and we had a nice chat. The rest was a mess. I paid extra for a “suite,” though I couldn't tell if that meant the desk, fridge, or microwave. The shower barely trickled, the bathroom was disgusting, and the towels felt like thin sandpaper. When I arrived, the night receptionist was asleep, and I had to call twice to get an answer. The hotel only cost $68, and I've stayed in plenty of decent places for under $70, so price alone doesn't explain this. In the morning, both towels provided had already been used. The owners said I'd have to wait until housekeeping came at 11 for replacements. Checkout was also at 11, and when I asked about a late checkout, I was told it would cost $5. The whole exchange made no sense, and there wasn't much point trying to argue. If you need a cheap room, there are other options. I'd avoid this one.

The room was disgusting: roaches in the drawers and bathroom, dirty sheets and towels, and a horrible smell. We asked for a refund, but they refused at first and moved us to another room instead. Then staff noticed our kids and said we'd have to pay an extra $25 per child, per night, even though the website says kids stay free. After a lot of arguing, we got a refund, but they still charged us for one night when we'd only been there a few hours. We had booked a week partly because of the kids-stay-free claim. The staff were difficult to communicate with and unreasonable about the condition of the room. I'd give it zero stars if I could.

The bed was comfortable and the TV had plenty to watch, so it worked as a place to spend the night. It's inexpensive, close to the hospital, and surrounded by restaurants. The rooms are meant to be non-smoking, but the tobacco smell was still noticeable, apparently because that's a fairly new policy.

The room had a musty odor, and I could hear the people next door flushing their toilet. Breakfast was a letdown too: boxed Hostess donuts and two kinds of cereal mixed together. For a $90 room, that was disappointing, especially since I've had better breakfasts at lower-priced places.

The bed bug bites on my arm were the last straw. I called the hotel to report them, was told the manager would call back, and heard nothing. A day later I reached him myself, and he was confrontational and hard to understand. I'd never stay here again. I've also read other reviews reporting bed bugs, so stay at your own risk. We'd chosen the place because we were driving home after the solar eclipse and every other hotel between Metropolis and Chicago was booked. On arrival, people were hanging around the parking lot and stairwells, which made the place feel unsafe and gave me the impression there might be drug problems. One room number had fallen off the door, so we had trouble finding our room. Inside, it was dusty and dirty, with bugs coming out of the sink, a hole cut into the bathroom door, and cigarette burns throughout. We were exhausted from driving, so we stayed anyway. In the morning we packed up and left as fast as we could. The on-site pool was empty and full of trash, and we could smell it while loading the car.
