Best Western Gateway Adirondack Inn

The hotel is close to University of Utica, and some of the staff were quite nice. Beyond that, we had a terrible stay. Our room was about 50 degrees at check-in because the heat had been shut off. We had to call the desk to learn how to reset the breaker, and even then the thermostat needed to be set to 90 just to keep the room around 70. The hallways weren't heated or sealed, so they were freezing, and they smelled of smoke from time to time. The walls were thin, and people repeatedly slamming the lobby doors made it hard to sleep. The parking lot hadn't been plowed. The bathroom wasn't clean, with residue on the back of the toilet and shaved hair on the shower shelf. We also saw evidence of leaks on the ceiling and several walls. The towels were small, rough, and stained. A housekeeper offered to swap ours, took the old ones, and never came back with the clean set she said was almost done washing. The sheets were too small for the mattresses and kept slipping off the corners. Our group booking through a third-party agent didn't get us rooms together. Several TV channels didn't work, and others were pixelated or lagged. Breakfast was fine, though there was no tea.

We checked into Best Western Utica on one of the coldest nights of winter and found there was no heat in our room. When we asked to move, we were told the other rooms available also had no heat, so we had to leave and find another hotel. Returning our keys didn't get us a refund. Management refused to reimburse us even though they couldn't provide a room with heat or an alternative room. I agree with Chrissy’s review because our experience was similar. I would never recommend this hotel. It falls far below the Best Western brand, and its refund policy feels very sketchy.

The breakfast at Best Western Adirondack Inn was a highlight, with fresh pastries, eggs, bacon, and proper coffee. Our room was spotless and the bed was comfortable. Staff were friendly and remembered our names. We stayed last weekend and had an awesome time. The location was perfect, and we'll definitely come back.

The room was right beside the public doorway, room 315, and the door closer wasn't adjusted properly. From about 6 AM onward it kept slamming. The front door lock on our room was hard to engage, and the extra lock was an old chain. There were also unlocked doors around the property without key entry, and no one was on desk duty after certain hours. None of that made the place feel safe. I ended up thinking that pushing a chair against the door would probably be enough for the night. The room itself was far below what I expect from Best Western. It was clean only if you overlooked stained sheets, a rancid sweat smell, black melted-plastic-looking stuff on the bedspread, a stain on the chair, and something stuck to the ceiling above the exit door. A hole in the tub was covered with scratched, worn white RV repair tape. The mirrored closet doors were dated and difficult to open, and the ironing board was very worn. There was no hot water at the tiny, poorly stocked, unattractive hospitality area. The glass front of the hotel was dirty too. If you have a glass-fronted hotel, hire people to clean the glass.
