Ventura Beach Marriott

The room was comfortable and clean, just what I expected from a Marriott. A couple of service details let the stay down, though. The shower's refillable body wash bottle was empty, and the pool had no clean towels. We asked the front desk, who said housekeeping would bring towels, but they never came. There weren't spare towels in the room, so we had to walk back wet. For a full-service Marriott, I expected more attention to these basics. The stay was fine overall, but taking better care of small details would make a difference.

The people I dealt with at the desk, in the lounge and restaurant, and in housekeeping were all delightful. Everything I saw, including the rooms and shared spaces, was immaculate. The room was comfortable, and there are plenty of nearby places to eat, with the beach a short walk away and the 101 a short drive. A few details could be better. The restaurant benches sit low compared with the tables, so eating feels awkward. There’s no water in the room, lounge, or at check-in, so you have to buy it in the lobby or bring your own. The lounge is closed on Fridays, and its food, though pretty good, is basic and limited for a hotel this size. Still, I had a pretty good stay.

The room was decent, though the toilet paper holder was in an odd spot that made me twist my back to reach it, and there was no hand towel bar. Parking was the bigger headache. The lights were often out, so the lot was too dark, and although the gate stayed open all evening, my pass wouldn't open it when I tried to leave. I had to go through three prompts before anyone could help open the gate. Great hotel otherwise.

The room was clean, and the location worked well, especially with the park and beach nearby. The property is large, though, and bringing our bags in was awkward. We shouldn't have unloaded at the front, but nobody outside was there to tell us. Hallway signs were missing or confusing. The entrance area felt a bit like a truck stop. It was just okay for me. I'm Gold elite, but there were no water bottles and no upgrade, even though the hotel seemed empty. With some effort from the owners, this could be a four-star stay.
