Econo Lodge Birmingham - Hoover

There were roaches on the floor and walls, along with bedbugs. I woke up bitten and felt very uncomfortable and unsafe trying to sleep there. This is a serious health and cleanliness failure. A hotel should at least provide a pest-free room, and this one didn't. I told the front desk during my stay, but they brushed it off and took no meaningful action. My request for a refund wasn't properly addressed either. I strongly recommend avoiding this property. I stayed December 25-27.

I've taken cross-country trips and stayed in plenty of motels, hostels, and even truck stops, but I've never seen a place this horrific. It was filthy and hadn't been cleaned. There was mold, the floor hadn't even been swept, and the towels and pillows were stained. I don't know how this hotel is still open. Don't stay here, even if you think you just need a place to sleep. Sleep in your car. Do not stay!

The manager treated the lobby like his living room. I needed to keep my luggage there because my bus left in the evening. The front desk person kindly let me stay until 3 p.m., which I appreciated. When I returned to collect my things, the manager appeared with his huge dog and said I couldn't be in the lobby after checkout because of covid, and wasn't supposed to leave luggage there. He wanted me to pay for another night just to wait a little longer. I've seen hotel lobbies used by guests waiting for early arrivals or late departures everywhere else. The manager had no hospitality and said he didn't care about my loyalty to Choice. Nice way to turn away a Diamond Choice member who stays over 100 nights a year. They seem to want riff raff instead of ordinary travelers. They also own a Comfort Inn down the road, and I wouldn't recommend that one either, given these guest-unfriendly policies. The photos are outdated and show a different property. The rooms were dark, dingy, and smelled strongly of chemical cleaner. Apart from clean sheets, everything was very dirty, and the floor looked like it hadn't been mopped in months. I found at least ten dead flies on the floor.

Mold was everywhere, under layers of paint and still coming through. There were bedbugs and roaches all over, and the place was very outdated and gross. Choice Rewards also shorted the number of nights on my stay, so I didn't get the points I was supposed to earn. If you don't care about service, bugs, or breathing mold, maybe this place is for you. I wouldn't go back.
