The staff were friendly, but getting luggage to and from the room was inconvenient. The room was extremely small, not the cleanest, and the whole property had a strange smell. The bed wasn't comfortable, with a tag saying it was bought in 2014. The tub sounded like it might fall through the floor while I showered, and there was mold around the AC vent. Room #319, I believe. Not the best or worst experience.
The two girls working the counter were very polite, but there were no other workers around. The pool clearly hadn't been maintained for a while, with algae on the bottom and lots of bugs and leaves floating in it. The bistro was out of almost everything, with very little they could actually make. This could be such a cute, successful hotel, but it's lacking a lot.
My family and I arrived in a bad thunderstorm and left at first light. We skipped the breakfast we'd counted on, one of the main reasons we booked, because the experience so far had been so incompetent. There was no breakfast as advertised, and no employee in sight. My advice: keep driving. At check-in the front desk person was nowhere around until another customer said she was sitting in the dining room. She was unresponsive and acted inconvenienced that we needed to check in. There was no valet cart, and you can't leave anything in your car because of the location. When I asked about carts, she pointed to a fabric wagon like one for a kids' t-ball game. I had to ask twice to borrow it, and she seemed reluctant. Our room was up a flight of stairs in pouring rain. When I asked for a better way to unload, she just stared, so my husband and I came up with our own plan. He backed down a very narrow loading dock on a steep, wet ramp so we could use the kiddy wagon. How do they expect someone who can't carry luggage down stairs to manage? While I waited by the door, a super sketchy guy ran down the ramp, slipped and fell hard, saw me, then ran back up to the car that had dropped him off. Based on Vicksburg's statistics, I'd say he was up to no good. We had to use the buddy system to park in the unlit structure across the street, with only basic lighting for a crime area. After 15 minutes of wrestling all our stuff upstairs, our room smelled of bug-killer chemicals. Both doors wouldn't shut unless kicked, and we pushed luggage in front of them for extra security. It didn't feel safe. The water had mud or sand in it, so if you want to brush your teeth or shower, you'd better not mind that. My advice is not to use the water.
The room was spacious, the bed comfortable, and the water toasty hot. I had zero trouble and really enjoyed my visit, including the rooftop barstwo streets up. Thanks to Tina, who kindly helped with my booking problem. I hadn't been to Vicksburg in years and needed one night on my way to the gulf coast. I picked the Mulberry for its history and riverside location. It's an older hotel, and sensible people should take that at face value. Reading some reviews, I think, look folks, it's Vicksburg for Christ sakes, mostly an economically depressed city. Excellent local choice to stay!
We enjoyed our stay at the Wyndham this past week. The room was quiet, the exercise room was clean, and the lobby had beautiful sitting areas. We ordered dinner from the bistro, and it was ready quickly. We had a great stay.
