We left a day early because the room and the whole stay were so uncomfortable. The pool itself was heated and fine, but vomit on the floor by it sat there for a long time. A restaurant worker eventually put a wet floor sign over it because people kept walking through that area to get out toward the beach. The room was awful for the price. The entrance opened straight into a bedroom, with only a narrow path around the beds to the vanity area. The separate balcony space was roomy, with a table and four chairs, two extra chairs, and a third bed, but those accent chairs felt like museum furniture you weren't meant to sit on. The plastic chairs outside were the most comfortable seats. We ended up using pillows on the dining chairs. The fridge was a decent size but warm for the first two days, then froze everything the next day. There was a gap between the bedroom doors, so they offered no privacy when closed. The three beds were rock hard, and you could feel the springs. Nobody slept well. Tapping the bed frames under the mattresses made a loud gong-like echo. The bathroom was basically a closet with an old tub and toilet. It was grimy, with rust, mildew or mold, stains, peeling paint, and dirty marks on the tub bottom where the surface had worn away. The shower head was falling apart. The fan switch only worked if you pushed it past the normal on position. Outlets were loose, there was only one free one by the beds, one didn't work, and some made big sparks when we plugged things in. Getting a luggage cart in and out was a frustrating job, so we didn't even bring it into the cramped room. The doors had a big lip, and the elevator doors closed fast enough to hit people or their things. If you held them, they beeped and a staff member would lecture you. Once the elevator was closing on our beach wagon as it struggled around the sharp hallway turn. I had already called out that the door was hitting it, but someone at the desk yelled from around the corner for us to let it close so it would stop beeping. The hotel also blocks the worse second parking area with a rusty chain on traffic cones, which guests are told to move and put back if they want to leave. Most employees were nice, but one kept nagging and complaining. At check-in she complained to us about a coworker, and another time she listened in on my conversation about something happening there, then came over to say something. We weren't rude or doing anything wrong, but I felt I might lose my temper if she spoke to me one more time. The reviews praising comfort and cleanliness must be from people who know staff or expect very little. We were so shocked and overwhelmed that I didn't think to take photos.

We've visited three or four times, often when we're in Virginia Beach to see family in the Navy, and it's been a pleasure each time. We like booking the room with the jacuzzi tub, especially in the off season when a long soak is nice. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and the staff at The Capes Hotel are friendly and helpful. The downstairs restaurant has lovely employees and really good food. The crab omelette and crab eggs Benedict are delicious, and the blackened tuna is great too. It's separate from the hotel, which doesn't provide breakfast or other food, and the hotel doesn't claim otherwise. For a budget stay on the Virginia Beach waterfront, it's one of my favorites if you don't need fancy extras.

The bed is the reason I won't come back. The mattress and frame were extremely noisy, and by the second night our backs were aching. What bothered me most was that there was no sealed mattress protector to guard against bedbugs or other contamination between guests. That was a hard ending to an otherwise good stay. The staff were lovely and helpful, and I felt safe. The place was generally clean, with a great location, roomy accommodation, and a nice view. It is older and basic, and the affordable rate made sense for that. I really liked everything else, so I hope management takes a look at the mattresses and upgrades them.

Right on the Boardwalk, with a perfect location and lovely rooms. The people there are the best, always friendly and ready to help. It was one of my best hotel stays, especially for such a good price.

The pillows didn't suit me. They're springy and pop right back up instead of staying squished, though they weren't terrible. I know pillows are personal, but fellow pillow fussy people might want to know. I don't usually rate a place over pillows. We came after Labor Day, when things were less crowded and turnover was calmer. They let us check in before 4 and gave us until 11:30 to check out instead of 11. Our room was clean, the beds were comfortable, and the shower pressure was just right. The staff were very friendly. It's a nice, ordinary middle-of-the-road spot, not fancy and not a dump, and the location puts you in the middle of everything. There's no hotel restaurant, but a small attached place serves breakfast and lunch at easy prices. In the lobby there's a cappuccino and espresso machine with a few flavors, plus filtered water for refilling bottles.
