The Silver Queen Hotel feels like a step back to its 1870s and 80s heyday, while the rooms still have modern comforts. Ms. Connie Carlson, a former Storey County Public School teacher who owns the place and sometimes tends bar, has done a fabulous job restoring this iconic building. My stay was delightful. I even heard silver spurs and a cowboy whistling down the hall once. Maybe it was a visitor from the past.

My boyfriend and I took separate showers while we were there today, and then a mat appeared out of nowhere. The place feels haunted everywhere, and it creeped us out enough that we had to go back into town. Don't get a room there, trust me.

That was a really unique night. I woke up around 4 a.m. feeling like someone had walked into the bed, but there was nobody there. I had a room facing the main street, which was nice since the rooms only have one light, right overhead, and the streetlight helped. It's an old building, so you can hear the neighbors through the transom windows between some rooms, though things quieted down after 10 p.m. Pretty sure the place is haunted.

We stayed in room 11, Rosie's room, and saw a few orbs, but nothing else. It didn't feel like the most haunted place in Virginia City, despite what people say. The staff were friendly. The bed was really uncomfortable, there was no heat or window, and we only had one outlet for charging phones. No TV, either. It was super loud at night, and people could come in to ghost hunt because the outside doors were left open. I was woken up several times. Better luck to you.

Room 11 has a nice atmosphere, like stepping back in time, and the bed was okay, though I'd bring my own pillows next time. Check-in at the bar was easy, then you're on your own, so I can't say much about service. We didn't actually see any paranormal activity, but I woke at 4 a.m. feeling watched and thought I heard soft breathing. It wasn't enough to scare me. There was also hallway chatter. It was fun, and I'd recommend it if you're into an old-time experience and the possibility of Annie or Rosie, the resident ghosts.
