Hale 'Ohu Bed & Breakfast

My husband and I felt like we had the beautiful grounds to ourselves. The owners have thought of so many thoughtful details, from a delicious breakfast in the room and a heated mattress to a spa-style shower and fleece blankets on the patio. For a beach resort, look elsewhere. But as a romantic, adults-only retreat, this place is truly special. One of my favorite stays ever, and my favorite on The Big Island. I loved every minute.

We originally planned to stay in Kailua-Kona and drive all over Big Island, so I'm really glad we changed plans and split our time, including a stay at Hale 'Ohu B&B. It was incredibly convenient for a place where you usually drive everywhere: Volcanoes National Park was only a few minutes away, and there were some shops and restaurants nearby. Things around there close early, but the park is open 24/7. We visited several times a day, taking breaks between trips, and the sunset views and nighttime glow were superb. The garden and rainforest walk were lovely surprises, full of plants and wildlife. It was damp when we explored, but that seemed to bring out the vegetation even more. The lounge was small but had comfortable seating, drinks, and snacks. Our room suited us perfectly, with a bed for two, a small dining space by the window, and a kitchenette with a fridge. Breakfast was put in the fridge before each morning, so we could eat whenever we wanted. The bathroom was bright and toiletries were provided. The room and grounds were damp for the season and location, but the dehumidifier helped. Nicole at the front desk was really friendly and gave us helpful advice. We think we also saw Gabrielle from a distance and waved. I'm not sure when we'll get back to Big Island, but we loved Hale 'Ohu and would consider staying there again.

We were lucky enough to see the volcano erupt, thanks to how close the room was to Volcano National Park. The breakfasts were delicious and thoughtfully prepared, ready for us to warm up and eat whenever we liked. Our room was stylish, clean, and comfortable, with a gorgeous garden setting. There was even a rug, chair, and table outside the door where we could enjoy the garden if we'd had time.

The front desk let us know the lava was glowing that night, and it's an experience we'll always remember. This was a wonderful stay close to the entrance of Volcanoes National Park. Our room was clean and cozy, with a peaceful rainforest view from the back patio. Since nearby dining options are limited, the kettle and microwave were especially thoughtful touches. Breakfast was delicious, set up in the fridge in advance so we could eat at our own pace. Can't wait to come back!
