The location worked well for us. The walk to the train station and National Mall was easy, and there were nice grocery stores and a great pizza place nearby. Most of the staff were very kind, too. Still, I wouldn’t stay here again when I’m back in DC. The price felt high for what the hostel offers, and there was no parking. We paid about $90 to leave the car in a parking garage for three nights. There were nightly events, but if you don’t drink, they didn’t have much for you. The place was just okay overall, and fairly clean. Two staff members talked badly about us to each other, apparently thinking we couldn’t hear them. In our private room, a grounding prong was stuck in an outlet, which seemed dangerous, and the heater was leaking. Of the five bathrooms, each had different problems with the shower, sink, or toilet. I think only one had all three working, and at least one sink and one toilet were out of order the whole time we were there, which was several days.

The staff were friendly and accommodating without being pushy, and the facilities were decent, neat, and comfortable enough to feel homey. The price was good, too. H Street is a convenient spot near Union Station, with plenty of pubs for a crawl. Most of my frustration came from sharing space with other guests. People came from all over and didn’t always share the same ideas about personal space or socializing. I was stared at a lot, and several men seemed almost desperate to befriend an American guy. That made me uncomfortable. I usually prefer to keep my privacy without having to ask for it. It’s a hostel, so you have to expect communal living with people from different places. I don’t think you can judge it on quite the same terms as a Motel 6. If you’re comfortable with the cultural differences around socializing and personal space, you should be fine.

I’ve stayed in a lot of places over the years, and this hostel is at the top of my list. The nightly events were great, and the common room was always full of laughter, positive energy, and good conversations. The guests and staff made it feel like a real community. Everything about the stay, from the people to the location, was amazing. I wouldn’t change a thing, and I’ll always treasure the memories. I’d absolutely recommend it, especially to people traveling solo. Solo travelers can feel comfortable here. Some places leave you feeling isolated or out of place, but I never felt that way at City House.

The staff were helpful, friendly, and knew their stuff. The beds squeaked a little, though I slept fine. I do feel for anyone sharing with a roommate who tosses and turns all night. It’s a nice place to stay, conveniently between Union Station and a Whole Foods Market.

The lounge was where it all happened. I met lots of travelers there, learned a lot, and felt part of a close-knit family because the staff often hung out with guests. The toilets were clean and there was enough room in the fridge. This was my first hostel stay, and City House really didn’t disappoint. If you’re in DC, skip the hotel and find some shade here. I’ll remember it.
