Baymont by Wyndham Duncan/Spartanburg

The building feels very old and overdue for an update, and the rooms had a musty odor. The photos make the place and its breakfast nook look much nicer than they do in person. There was no pool, despite it being advertised, and I saw what looked like homeless people or drug dealers in the back lot. There was a lot of late-night traffic and suspicious activity behind the building.

We picked this inn because it was close to where we needed to go and allowed pets, though the fee was $20 per pet, per night. When we called to confirm, the person who answered just said “Hello”; after we checked we had the right place, he said yes and spoke very little English. The room was in awful shape. The carpet was so filthy that after about 20 minutes my husband's clean socks were disgusting underneath. The walls, doors, baseboards, and bedding were dirty, the sheets smelled like cigarettes, and the little couch felt almost sticky. Furniture was scratched up, battered, and missing pieces. As soon as we opened the door, a powerful cigarette smell hit us. We left the door open to try to air it out, but the windows don't open. My husband told the front desk about the smoke and asked if we could check out early. The man only said, “it's fine. No refund”. We stayed reluctantly for one more night, then left early the next day and lost our money. I had headaches and still felt dirty after showering. Even eight hours from there, our car trunk, luggage, clothes, and we ourselves smelled of smoke when we got home. I've got photos of every detail, and would post them if I could. This was a terrible stay, and I wouldn't recommend even one night here. If you care about cleanliness and don't want a room that smells like someone chain-smoked in it for a year, save your money and go somewhere else. It isn't worth it.

The beds and couch were comfortable, and the shower was decent. The place was convenient and clean enough, though I did spot a few small bugs, which I expected. The frustrating part was check-in: during a thunderstorm, we spent 45 minutes waiting behind a group with problems. Once it was our turn, the actual check-in took five minutes. They should help guests with easy check-ins while someone else's issue is being sorted out.

A peaceful, affordable spot right in the middle of Duncan, with everything just a short distance away. The staff are friendly, and the rooms were clean and comfortable. Whatever the reason for getting away, I really enjoyed this place.
