The place felt safe and clean, and the price was good. I’d still recommend it and would stay again. Just know it’s a pretty hands-off hotel: breakfast is only available through a prepaid room-service option, and sometimes it seemed like one person was running the whole place. I also left two things in my room recently, and housekeeping didn’t find them.

On March 27, 2026, after a week at My Place Hotel in West Valley City (3074 S Decker Lake Dr), the front desk clerk, Ismael, called my room at 7:50 AM and said there was “missing paperwork.” He had checked me in and verified my ID days earlier, but I went down to the lobby. Police were waiting there and handcuffed me. Ismael later told my husband they had shown him my name, photo, and room number. That wasn’t true. My last name is “one in a zillion,” and the hotel had my ID in its computer. After going “round and round” checking my actual ID, the police realized they’d been given false information. The staff had identified me as a wanted person even though they’d had my real ID for seven days. I was also tricked into leaving my minor daughter alone, asleep in the room, while I was detained. I had to explain to her that I wasn’t going to jail. No one took the time to make sure their assumptions were right, even though they clearly knew who I was. I was woken from a dead sleep, handcuffed, and stressed about who would be with my child. At 10:30 am, 30 mins before check out and two hours after police released me, I asked to extend my stay. Suddenly the hotel said it was “sold out.” Management has refused to take responsibility or offer a refund. They chose to “dispose” of a guest they’d wronged instead of apologizing for the trauma. I filed a police report, started a legal claim for gross negligence and defamation, and notified corporate. I’m warning other parents and travelers so no mother is lured away from her child by staff she’s supposed to trust. DO NOT STAY HERE.

On our first night, the microwave nearly caught fire. We had to bring it to the front desk and move one from another room ourselves because the staff didn’t know how. Later the power went out in our room. Staff reset the fuse and told us that if it happened again, “we can just open the panel ourselves and fix it.” A guest should never have to handle a fuse panel or swap an appliance. When I got upset and asked for compensation, the staff member gave me attitude. They apparently couldn’t offer another room or a discount either. Staff need a lot more training in handling problems. I’ll update this after I see how the manager handles it in the morning.

The design was great, and everything was really clean and comfortable. I was surprised to find a full-size refrigerator, toaster, and two-burner stove, but no dishes or utensils at all. Are you supposed to bring your own pan to make eggs?

Service seemed pretty good, but truck drivers should avoid this place unless it’s an emergency. Google Maps showed truck parking, but that isn’t actually available. The satellite view is out of date, and several new buildings nearby make it really hard for trucks to get in or out. There’s a small parking area on the side, though backing into it is tough, and a light pole sits right where you turn into the lot.
