Ocean House

We’ve made Ocean House’s New Year’s Day brunch a tradition for the last few years, and it hasn’t let us down. There’s a tasty, generous menu with choices for different tastes, and the staff are friendly and helpful. It isn’t cheap, but for me the food, view, and hospitality make the price worthwhile.

The grounds are beautiful, but that was about the only positive for us. We tried to have a drink with an ocean view in the dining room, but were told they couldn’t seat us because they needed to prepare for dinner service. This was after they’d apparently been “slammed” earlier, though there seemed to be about six people total. We waited for an hour in the lounge, looking at the empty dining room, while we struggled through the worst martini we’ve ever had. No one was clearing or setting up that room during the time we were there, so we still don’t understand why we couldn’t sit there for half an hour. The drink seemed hard to mess up, but they managed. Everyone we encountered had an attitude and gave us the impression they thought they were better than us. Nina, the bartender, was especially unpleasant. She served our drink in a chipped glass, then just poured it into another glass instead of making a fresh one. We felt really disrespected. She could use some improvement in how she treats guests. We also weren’t given an itemized receipt. When we asked the “manager” whether tip was included, she had no idea and seemed like she’d only just been hired. The whole thing felt sketchy, disgusting, and traumatic. Get well soon, Ocean House.

I found the atmosphere calm and good for reflection or thinking through business plans, with a view to go with it. The rooms were clean, and the property has a timeless coastal feel. Service was decent, though a few things could have gone more smoothly. At a resort of this caliber, I’d expected a bit more attention. Still, the waves, peace, and open views make up for a lot. Everyone, from check-in onward, has been attentive, friendly, and ready to help however they can.
