White River Inn and Suites

We booked online, but the first room wasn't what we'd reserved, so the front desk switched us. The second room was disgusting: dirty carpet with stains and burn marks, a cigarette smell, mold on the ceiling above the bed, loose furnishings falling apart, and filthy carpet corners. We left and went to Fireside Inn, and I'm glad we did. Zero stars.

The suite layout worked well for our family of three just before Christmas 2025. My wife and I had a separate bedroom, and our adult son could sleep in the living area. We liked having a kitchen for cooking, and the lobby offered free continental breakfast. After that, though, things went downhill. There were several carpet stains, and the bedspread was thin and threadbare. The couch was dirty and worn through, with a 6-inch hole in one cushion. Although we'd booked for three, there were no linens for the pullout couch and only two bathroom towels. The coffee maker had decaf only. On the second day we found roaches in both the kitchen and living room. The two TVs had different channel lineups, no channel guide, and we had to scroll through channels one by one. On the bedroom TV, the text box that appeared when changing channels named a station other than the one actually on screen. With new furnishings and a thorough cleanup, this place could be much better. For now, I'd spend a few extra dollars at another nearby hotel.

The staff were pleasant and kind, but the rest of our two days at WRI were tragic. Our room was disgusting, with bathtub mold, holes in the walls, stained-looking conditions, and no shades. The key failed three times, so we had to go back downstairs each time to have it reconnected. We smelled poop on the way to the room, then found a pile of dog poop in the hallway. It was gag-inducing. The fitness center next door that they said we'd have access to was just a small room with a bike, elliptical, and treadmill, which would have been fine if the treadmill worked. We'd also checked that there was a business center because we needed to print a document. The printer was out of order and the computer had no WiFi or internet, so we had to scramble to find a printer on the way to the wedding. I'm shocked by all the five-star reviews. As another reviewer said, maybe the rooms vary a lot. Ours was awful.

For a two-star hotel, this felt very expensive during the first week of October. The room was spacious, with double doors to the bathroom and a large living and kitchen area. It was clean, but the carpet had old-looking stains, and so did the sofa. The shower was tiny. With the curtain closed, it stuck to my body and left no room to move. The bar soap wasn't nice to use and didn't feel smoothing on the skin; the shampoo and conditioner came in small, old-style bottles. Breakfast was the usual simple spread of eggs, sausage, toast, waffles, and fruit, nothing special. The location is close to Quechee and Stowe, but there aren't many dining options nearby. The front desk wasn't very friendly either.
