The Starlux turned into a warm, welcoming home during our Wildwood vacation, though we booked it mainly for its classic Doo Wop look. The staff were exceptional. One night we got caught in a torrential downpour walking back from dinner, and a front desk attendant saw us coming, grabbed fresh towels, and met us at the door. A small gesture, but it turned the night around. Most rooms face the gorgeous pool from a balcony. The hotel is very dated, as you’d expect for its age, but comfortable for two or three people. Our room was quiet despite the busy intersection, and the tiled bathroom was adorable and spotless. There was a microwave, fridge/freezer, plenty of outlets, and a useful Smart TV. Standard rooms are quite small and may feel cramped with a bigger group. The huge pool was spotless, never too busy for us, and even served as a nightlight after dark. Other extras included a free washer and dryer, free beach gear rental, a Doo Wop Lounge, a beach wash-off area, and decent breakfast. Just expect juice, milk, muffins, and pastries. Parking was easy in the large lot reserved for hotel guests. The location is nearly perfect, a short block from the boardwalk and beach. The Boardwalk Tram runs its full length from there, and the hotel also offers free bike rentals. There’s a great three-course mini golf course attached, with its own amenities. We used the outdoor fire pit and food truck. During our stay, a little coffee stand was in a gorgeous old Airstream, though I understand the food truck changes by year. The permanent Kohr Bros location was a great way to end one night. Since Starlux is owned by the Moreys Pier group, we also made good use of the $40 discount on combo park passes both days.

The staff are what took our Starlux and Wildwood stay beyond what the stars suggest. They were kind, informative, and helpful throughout. We were also impressed by the location. The boardwalk, beach, Convention Center, Morey’s Piers, several waterparks, and the Wildwood sign for family photos were all a short walk away. The hotel itself is a gorgeous Mid-Century Modern building celebrating Wildwood’s heritage. Our spotless room was charming, with a kitchenette that saved us a few restaurant bills and a balcony overlooking both the beach and hotel pool. There’s a gorgeous pool, bubbling hot tub, 27-hole mini golf, the famous Kohr’s custard stand, and bikes for the boards. Breakfast was pretty great too, and coffee refills were available around the clock, handy when the kids wear you out. Our Wildwood vacation was perfect in every way, in large part because we chose the Starlux Hotel.

The great location right off the beach and decent rooms were outweighed by a miserable time with some guests and the staff. The walls are paper thin. A cheerleading convention brought dozens of young kids who were unsupervised, screaming in the hallways and running around, with doors slamming and general chaos inside and outside. I spoke to the front desk several times because it kept going well into the evening on both nights, but was told nothing could be done. The single elevator had impossibly long waits because the cheerleaders played with it all weekend, holding it between floors. For the price, it’s a decent enough hotel, but don’t expect quiet or relaxation. Guests seemed free to do whatever they wanted, no matter how it affected others, and staff did nothing to address it.

We stayed one off-season night for a wedding at Mudhen, just a short walk away. The room was small but fine for what we needed, clean, and had comfortable beds. Check-in was pleasant, and there’s an elevator as well as stairs to the second and third floors. The pool was closed for the season, but the hot tub was open. It was a great stay, and I’d be glad to return.

We stayed in the Milano, a house behind the main building, for just one night and wished we could have stayed longer. The property is immaculately maintained, and the staff were excellent. Despite its age, everything in the room was in working order, and the room and bathroom were spotless. My wife and I both thought the shower was one of the best we’ve ever had.
