We picked Jellystone Williamsburg for a first-week-of-June trip to visit the local theme parks. The location is great, but the staff weren’t kind, helpful, or considerate of us with kids. We thought the place looked nearly empty when we arrived, then learned that week wasn’t considered peak season. That meant many kid-friendly amenities were only partly open or closed, which I hadn’t expected. Construction on our site continued through our last camping day, and we got plenty of explanations for why they didn’t care that we were still there. The office closed by 5, so whenever we needed supplies, it seemed to be shut. KOA is a much better experience.

RVs and cabins might work well here, but tents don’t. The tent sites aren’t as advertised: the map, photos, and details don’t make clear that you can’t drive up to them. You have to park in the lot and haul your gear a long way. Deep, sharp ravines surround the sites, so this really isn’t suitable for small kids.

Our campsite was lovely and set back from the main road, so we could relax by the fire. We were far from the wifi, but managed with our Hotspot. Firewood delivery to the site was great, and the wood burned well. All the workers were welcoming and polite. Still, the campground is changing since Jellystone took over, and it wasn’t the same stay we knew with the earlier owners and franchises. Golf carts were everywhere, with kids driving them around, so the walk to the bath house felt like playing frogger. The bath house only had its trash emptied during our stay and was disgusting by the last day. We’ve stayed here for years and always loved it. I hope these are just growing pains, but the constant carts are a dealbreaker for us. We like activities for kids and campers, just not that traffic.

The campground has recently become a Jellystone, and some signs and statues are still missing. We had a tent site, and if you haven’t been before, it’s probably best to call when booking since some sites are quite a walk from the parking area. The grounds were pretty, the facilities clean, and the staff helpful and friendly. It was a positive stay, and we’ll likely return.

We usually bring our camper, but rented a cabin for one night and would do it again for a short trip. It was clean and pleasant, with a bedroom, bunk room, bathroom, and kitchenette with a few dishes. The table, chairs, and small sofa suited us well, and the heat worked great. Towels and linens were supplied. I get cold, so we brought extra blankets. We took our two little dogs to Busch Gardens, and their crate fit perfectly beside the sofa. We didn’t use the dishes since I’d packed paper plates and plasticware. The kitchen faucet leaked when turned on, and I let them know at checkout. It was worth it.
