1896 House Inn & Country Lodgings

The room was spacious and the bed was fairly comfortable. It’s a nice setting in a quiet area, though the property is right on a main road. For the price, it was decent, but a fridge is really a basic need, especially for guests who have medical items that need refrigeration. There was no fridge or microwave, and there wasn’t a room phone. Verizon signal was limited or nonexistent, so calls could be difficult, and the Wi-Fi kept dropping. The doors were hard to close. I had to lift and slam both the inside door and the screen door. The outlets need updating, too. The one by the window only had a two-prong plug.

It’s a beautiful place, and we plan to return, but this trip cost us time and gas. We’d booked a suite for New Year’s Eve and drove five hours, only to find it was closed because the rooms had no heat. They offered us a hotel room at a discounted rate, but we wanted a suite to celebrate, so we declined and drove five hours back home. They called while we were on the way, but I didn’t get the call. By the time they called, we were already three hours into the drive. I wish we’d heard from them early that morning.

We waited 20 minutes just to see someone in the office, then got a room with cobwebs, mold in the coffee machine, shower, and bathroom, and carpet that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks. There was mouse or rat poop on the bathroom floor, and who knows what else. We were lied to and left stranded without a room. These were inhumane conditions, unsuitable for anybody. Don’t book here.

The room prices were wildly out of line with what we got. The fireplace and rustic woods in the pictures may draw you in, but consider staying somewhere else. This just isn’t a good motel for the money. The front desk folks were nice and trying hard, but our King Suite booking became a regular room because I was told the suite was no longer available. I shouldn’t have to explain that a regular room isn’t the same as an oversized King Suite. We were in town for a wedding, and at least four rooms in our party had no heat. We asked for space heaters and blankets. Heaters were brought in, but no blankets. We turned them off at midnight because they weren’t safe and were making the room smoking hot, then froze by morning. The next night the heat came on and pushed the room over 80. We turned it off in more than one room, but it kept running. First we froze, then we were smoked out. Several engineers were in our party and tried to get the heat working, but couldn’t.
