TownePlace Suites by Marriott Winchester

The rooms were comfortable and clean, and there were restaurants and a grocery store close by. I booked at short notice for a business trip, and the front desk staff were friendly and welcoming. The man who checked me in introduced himself and the other people at the desk, then helped with directions and timing for the airport. Winchester is a beautiful town in a fairly rural part of Northern VA. I'd stay here again.

We had to add a night when a huge snowstorm was moving in, while we were heading back to Massachusetts from our Florida vacation. We'd stayed at several Marriott hotels during our couple of weeks in the mid-Atlantic, and this one was quiet on the 4th floor, with a comfy king bed and a very clean room and bathroom. Breakfast had a good, fresh selection, and the coffee was hot. The daytime front desk supervisor, “Skyler,” was such a pleasure to deal with, with a great personality and really helpful local restaurant suggestions. We'd happily recommend the hotel and stay again. Cheers!

We'd stayed here many times while visiting our daughter at college, and had hoped for a good review. This time, a day before our prepaid two-night stay, an immediate family member was admitted to the hospital. Since we didn't know what would happen, we decided to pick up our daughter so she could come back and see them. I asked whether the hotel could make an exception and refund the second night we wouldn't use. The woman at the desk on arrival night and the supervisor the next morning both said they'd ask the GM. Later they called to say they couldn't refund it because it was prepaid. I understand we'd paid in advance, and I would've accepted a clear answer that they wouldn't make an exception, even if I found that a little ridiculous given the situation. Instead, they said they couldn't do it, and I believe they could have. Last year, we asked another Marriott to refund an unused second night and they did, since we were Platinum Elite. This hotel wouldn't do that and lied to us. What upset me was the lack of compassion and then being insulted with a lie. We won't stay here again while visiting our daughter over the next four years.

The location was fine, and the front desk attendant apologized when we found no tissues and only four paper towels in the room. They gave me two of each missing item. But the room itself was gross: old, dirty, dusty, dingy, and unclean. See the pictures. I'm not sure how this place has 4.3 stars.
