Sheraton Colonia Golf & Spa Resort

The first room had housekeeping problems, but we were moved to another one and had a wonderful stay after that. The location is special, and the pools, gyms, and resort setting suited us well as a couple looking to unwind for a few days in Colonia. It’s also very family and kid friendly, so I’d happily consider it for a trip with children. The property could use cosmetic work, including refreshed rooms and decor and renovations to some dated areas. Service and maintenance also fell short of five star standards. I’d stay here again, but I’d go in knowing not to count on every need being met at a high end hotel service level.

The staff really made this stay for us. Everyone was friendly, relaxed, and ready to help with anything. Special thanks to Andres at the front desk, who welcomed us with such a kind smile and got our vacation off to a lovely start. We had a large, clean, very comfortable room that worked well for four of us, two adults and two teens. A hot water or coffee machine in the room would have been handy. The property is peaceful, with birds, trees, and nice breezes off the river. We borrowed bikes for free and rode into town, about a 20 minute ride, and also went swimming at a nearby beach. For longer stretches of sand, it’s better to go a few minutes farther away. There was plenty to do at the resort. We played footgolf and pool, swam, and got massages. The warm water pool was open until 10 pm, and swimming under the stars was lovely. Breakfast was amazing, with great quality and lots of choices. The restaurant menu was decent and didn’t seem much pricier than food elsewhere in town, though everything, even grocery stores, was expensive. It isn’t cheap, and there are probably better places in town for dinner, but the food was fine and the setting was really nice. We loved our time at Sheraton Colonia. Staying here was so relaxing that it felt worth every penny. We hope to return and would recommend it to anyone.

We ordered steak at the restaurant, and it arrived wrapped in melted plastic. The staff said they’d prepare a new one without the plastic, then brought back the same steak with the plastic removed. We left rather than eat it. There wasn’t another place nearby unless you had a car. The pools were dirty and poorly maintained, and the old pool chairs looked worn out. The carpets in the rooms were badly stained with who knows what. Marriott should drop this property. Stay here at your own peril.

The room and linens were clean, but using the hotel’s food and location made Colonia much less enjoyable for me. It’s far from town, and with no Ubers around, getting taxis back and forth was a hassle. The hotel food was wildly overpriced for the quality. My $19 cheese pizza was like cardboard, and even the few $1 NYC pizzas still around in 2024 were better. The seafood pasta tasted stale to me and seemed to use frozen seafood. Even paying with Marriott points didn’t make the room worth it. I regret not booking a boutique hotel in town or near the vineyard. I think I’d have enjoyed Colonia much more if I’d stayed somewhere else.
