There's plenty to do at Hostel Point in summer, from surfboard rentals and lessons to beach sunsets and scheduled events. The swimming pool, BBQ area and Ping-Pong table are being improved, and there's also a bar, meals, guest kitchen, Wi-Fi, free parking and transfer service. A wonderful homemade breakfast is included, too. The rustic beach hostel is in La Pedrera, a five-minute walk from the closest beach and a few blocks from the city center, bus station and services. Dorms for 8, 4 or 2 people have bunk beds, comfortable mattresses, linen, lockers and ceiling fans, with separate bathrooms for women and men that are always impeccable. You can head to beaches nearby or visit Cabo Polonio, Laguna de Rocha, La Paloma, Sierras de Rocha or Valizas. Horseback rides, bike rentals and transfers can be arranged.

Joaquín deserves a special mention as manager, and the staff keep the place well run. It's cosy and surprisingly neat and tidy. Breakfast had limited options, perhaps because we went right at the end of summer, but we had a great time overall. The beach and city center are a bit far, about a 20-minute walk.
