There were hardly any guests around, and only one family who weren’t staying at the hotel was using the pool. Even so, the staff demanded 70,000 bolívares from my elderly parents-in-law just to sit beside it. My wife grew up in Mérida, where her parents have lived for more than 45 years. She’d heard this used to be one of the best hotels, but it seems to have fallen a long way. When I asked for the most senior staff member available, she was rude and unhelpful. She also claimed I couldn’t speak Spanish, though I’m fluent after working for over ten years in Spain and parts of South America. I stayed as polite as I could while trying to sort out what seemed completely unfair. Mérida is an awesome place, but I’d avoid this hotel if you’re looking for somewhere good to stay.
