Hotel 1829

We were visiting the 99 steps as cruise passengers when we happened upon this place, and stopping in was a great decision. Jessica welcomed us warmly, showed us around, and shared the hotel's rich history. She also invited us to wander through the gorgeous three-tiered gardens. I can imagine guests get even more of that hospitality. Definitely recommend a stop, or a stay.

Nick at the bar was the best part of the hotel. He makes his own ingredients from scratch, and a drink there is a must. The room, though, was much too dark because several bulbs were out. Shuttered windows let plenty of corridor noise through, and there’s no elevator or in-room safe. We also had two days of trouble with the private drivers the hotel called after we asked for a regular taxi. They called Mohammed, who would likely charge three times the standard taxi rate. That felt sneaky and very unprofessional.

The restored bedrooms are beautifully detailed, and the restaurant and bar are amazing. The food was superb, too. Mark and Jess have clearly put their hearts into restoring Hotel 1829, and the care shows throughout this historic property. My family spent a few days here during our seven-day catamaran trip last summer, and it was a highlight. If you're anywhere near Saint Thomas, don't miss it.

The daily highlight was the cordial, professional staff, along with the lobster thermidor at Lavalette’s. Our balcony room had an incredible harbor and bay view, so we spent many mornings and evenings taking it in. My wife and I stayed five nights in March 2026 at Hotel 1829 in downtown Charlotte Amalie, Saint Thomas, and were extremely pleased. Its vintage French style and modern comforts, especially the best shower ever, make it stand apart from the island's usual beach resorts. The downtown location is great for shopping and dining. Just be ready for the stairs, since there’s no guest elevator.
