Cat Ba Local Cruise

The owner was very friendly, though at first he tried to sell us all sorts of things, like excursions. Our room was spacious and very clean, with comfortable beds, a kettle, towels, and toiletries. It was cold in Cat Ba while we were there, and we were freezing in the room. Breakfast was eggs and bread with jam, the same each day, and there was only that one option. It was okay, but could get boring on a longer stay. The location was good, and overall we had a good experience. I’d avoid the laundry service, though. At 50k per kilo, it was the most expensive I’ve encountered on my trip through Asia.

Alex, the owner, is a lovely man who’ll sort out any problems you have. He recently bought the hotel and is doing his absolute best to bring it up to western standards, though it’s not there yet. The facilities are basic, but for the price I’d recommend staying, even just for Alex.

I liked the firm bed in the sea-view room, and the room itself was okay. The bathroom had moisture everywhere and really needs renovating. I’d avoid the other rooms, since they don’t have a sea view or any nice view.

This place is still listed on Airbnb and Google maps, but it has completely new owners and management who won’t honor bookings made through the listing. As far as I know, it’s been fake for over two years. Don’t book a room here!
