After 26 hours traveling from Italy with no sleep, I arrived in Hanoi hoping for a quiet couple of nights. This turned into my worst hostel stay ever. Total sleep across both nights: six hours. At reception I said I had two nights booked, but they first insisted it was one. They checked again and found I was right. Then they quoted 300,000 d, though my Agoda booking showed 258k d. When I pointed that out, I got an excuse and they agreed to 260k d. Not a great start. My first room smelled strongly of mold. I checked with two other guys and they could smell it too. I was too exhausted to move that night, but managed barely three hours of sleep because someone below my bunk snored like a rhino, even with earplugs. I asked to change rooms the next day since mold makes me sneezy. The next room seemed okay until a loud fan started up every two hours for about ten minutes. Then the nights went on. At 11 p.m. someone on the top bunk turned on a lamp that lit the whole room, and after about 20 minutes of leaving it on, he fell asleep. I asked him to switch it off, and he did. Around 1 a.m. a couple upstairs had very loud sex. They were hopefully in a private room, so I won't say much about them. At 3 a.m. two drunk Irish girls burst in, slammed the door, and talked at normal volume as if nobody else was trying to sleep. One had apparently lost her phone, so they kept going in and out, making a mess of things. A staff member tried to help and apologized when he saw how furious I was from the top bunk, but the girls carried on for at least 40 minutes. I just tried not to say anything because I knew I'd lose my temper. By about 4:30 a.m. I finally got to sleep for a few hours. At 10:30 someone, I think a staff member, came into the room, switched on the light, and slammed the door. Staff, keep track of who is in the hostel and make sure people can get some peace and quiet. Parents of the Irish girls, use condoms next time.

As a backpacker, I found it easy to relax and recharge here before heading on with my trip. It felt safe, calm, clean, and well maintained. The friendly, welcoming staff made me feel comfortable too. I had a lovely stay and would happily recommend it to other travelers. ✨

For 200k, about $8 USD, I found Hanoi Solo Hostel a fantastic Old Quarter base. Hoan Kiem Lake, the night market, and Tạ Hiện beer street are just steps away, so getting around on foot was easy. The staff were super friendly and gave me good local food tips at check-in. My dorm bunk was spotless and had a privacy curtain and personal locker. Strong WiFi, AC, and hot showers made it comfortable after a full day out. Highly recommend for backpackers. I'll be back next time I'm in Hanoi.

My hotel reservations fell through at the last minute, so I booked this hostel instead and ended up having a great two-night stay. The buffet breakfast was REALLY good for a hostel, better than at most of the pricier hotels where I usually stay. Staff were courteous, friendly, and professional, and the spot in the old city made it quick and easy to walk everywhere. You can't go wrong here.

I'm a foreign woman traveling alone, and I'd tell others in the same situation to stay somewhere else. I emailed all my details, but the male staff still became hostile very quickly and seemed misogynistic. They refused to use Google Translate. I found another place run by women; they were much more understanding and communicative. They weren't perfect, but they weren't hostile. Hostile is only one letter away from hostel. Get in and out as quickly as you can.
