Au Lac Legend Hotel

The hotel is handy for major tourist attractions in District 1 of Ho Chi Minh, all easy to reach on foot. The breakfast had practically no vegetarian choices, though, and the staff weren’t especially welcoming, doing only what was necessary. I asked for black tea during all four nights of my stay. They had it, but wouldn’t bring a few sachets from the restaurant to my room. I’ve never before been unable to get English breakfast tea at a hotel. The pool was a joke, smaller than a backyard pool, and the lobby was unimpressive. The hotel clearly seems to have seen better days. Showering left a lot of water on the bathroom floor, which could be hazardous for elderly guests. If you have heavy luggage, you’ll need to carry it up about 8 to 10 steps from the taxi drop-off. In another part of the world, I’d call this a 3-star hotel, not the 4-star rating it claims.

The rooms were clean, comfortable, and well maintained, with good value for the location. Staff were consistently friendly, professional, and genuinely helpful, and the hotel felt welcoming and well run. Au Lac Legend Hotel is centrally located in Ho Chi Minh City, with major attractions an easy walk away. The rooftop is a nice extra, with a small pool, bar, and pleasant city views, and afternoon tea adds to the value. It’s an excellent choice for comfort and service, especially for first-time visitors.

There’s a single elevator, but it’s fast. The hotel was clean throughout, with attractive decorations, and the staff were warm. We had a good stay and I highly recommend it. One thing to know if you’re sensitive to light: some gets through the curtains at night, so a sleep mask might help. The room fit two people, three suitcases, and two backpacks, and came with complimentary water. Breakfast ran from around 6:30 to 10:00 and had local dishes, fruit, yogurt, bread, and two or three pastries. They could also make an omelette. On the 11th floor there’s a rooftop with a small pool, which I believe was also a jacuzzi, though we didn’t try it, plus a bar, restaurant, and tea-time area from about 14:30 to 16:30. There’s also a sauna and a small gym with two cardio machines and one weight machine, all with nice views.

The rooms were a good size and impressively quiet despite the busy surroundings. Staff throughout the hotel were friendly and helpful. There are some useful amenities too: a small pleasant pool area with a sauna, and an upper rooftop lounge with great views. The gym is well-equipped but extremely compact. The location is excellent for walking to major attractions, including the Independence Palace, Central Post Office, Ben Thanh Market, and Ben Nghe Street Food Market. Local food stalls right outside make breakfast and lunch easy, and Jollibee is a block away if you want something non-Vietnamese near the end of your trip. The breakfast buffet was average, the rooftop bar menu just okay, and afternoon tea was a thoughtful touch but not especially well executed. The single elevator often caused delays. Still, Au Lac Legend offers good value with its location, warm service, and comfortable rooms, despite some limits in the amenities and dining.
