This old house has a lot of history, and if you get the host chatting, you can learn plenty about Aliwal North more than 100 years ago. The same family has owned it for 118 years, and it was completed in 1908. Its original art nouveau furniture is still there, so it felt like stepping back in time, apart from the host’s modern clothes. Don’t expect WiFi or TV, since those weren’t around 120 years ago. Our en suite bathroom was modern, as it had been added later. The bed was comfortable, and the continental breakfast was adequate.

A beautiful stopover in Aliwal. This historic mansion is an architectural delight, with its original furniture and fixtures, including furniture designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The hosts make Conville Bed & Breakfast especially memorable. The family has been here for four generations, and they warmly welcome guests with wonderful stories about the house and its history. The building itself is a remarkable Herbert Baker-designed home that dates back to 1912, with solid wooden doors, grand acrylic rooms, and plenty of timeless charm. In Maletswai, this historic gem blends elegance with comfort. The reception was great, and the location is perfect. Conville Guest House is an experience, not just a place to stay. Highly recommended for anyone who appreciates heritage, hospitality, and the magic of the Eastern Cape!

The owners are incredibly friendly and helpful, and they’ll share lots about the house if you’re interested. Everything is clean and well kept while still holding onto its vintage feel. The beds are super comfortable too. It’s a beautiful place that feels like stepping back into the 70s, and definitely one of the best places to stay in South Africa!

The house could use some sprucing up, but don’t judge it by the outside. The rooms are lovely, and it’s been in the same family since it was built. There’s plenty of history for anyone who’s interested, and the bathrooms are clean, though not the most modern. From the stoep, you get great views across the Orange River. The friendly dogs asking for affection add real character.
