Leeuwenbosch Country House, an eight-bed historic home built in 1908, embodies the rich history of the South African Eastern Cape Frontier. Located within the renowned Amakhala Game Reserve, this gracious settler home of the Fowlds family is nestled amidst expansive gardens. Leeuwenbosch offers spacious accommodations in four en-suite bedrooms, each adorned with antiques and historical paintings. Guests can enjoy delicious cuisine and a wide range of game-viewing activities, including guided drives, walks, and river cruises, led by expert professional guides. After morning coffee or afternoon high tea, knowledgeable guides escort guests through the scenic Amakhala Game Reserve, showcasing its diverse wildlife, from elephants and rhinos to lions and springboks. Between activities, guests can relax in the 19th-century stone chapel, enjoy high tea on the veranda, or unwind in the cozy stone-walled cellar bar. The Fowlds family, who have owned the homestead for five generations, delight in sharing their remarkable Southern African heritage with visitors. Shearer's Lodge, a separate building set back from the main house, offers four contemporary double suites overlooking tranquil gardens from a wide veranda. Beautifully converted from the original shearing shed, Shearer's provides an ideal base for exploring the Eastern Cape, including the nearby Addo Elephant National Park, just 30 kilometers away. Day safaris can be booked directly with the lodge (leeuwenbosch@amakhala. co. za), starting at 10:00 AM and ending at 1:30 PM, including a two-course lunch and drinks. Children over six are welcome.

The staff were the very best part of this place. Every person was warm, kind, and friendly, and I felt like I was staying in a country house with family. Our ranger Aaron was especially lovely, calm and positive. We enjoyed every drive with him and learned so much. He and the rest of the staff were the highlight of our trip. The chefs are incredible. Every meal, from breakfast through lunch to the three-course dinner, was delicious, homemade, and not heavy. The main house and our room felt like a step back in time, the bed was so comfortable, and the grounds were beautifully green and well kept. Warthogs and zebras were around the property, but not dangerous at all. What a dream place to stay.

Liam was our safari guide and barman, and what an experience tracking the lions, watching them run along the skyline, then ending up right there with them on the road. The room was large, and the pool was great for swimming and lying in the sun. Aya served dinner and breakfast and was great. The staff were so friendly, and the food was amazing. We loved this place.

Obdu was our driver and was amazing. We were so lucky to see so many animals, and the staff made the stay special with how friendly and welcoming they were. We had the most amazing time at Leeuwenbosch. Couldn’t recommend it enough, and we hope to come back soon!

I stayed for 5 nights and went on 10 game drives. Never got bored, I appreciated each one more than the last. Everyone gave us such a warm welcome, including Mouse (the cat) and Smudge (the dog).

We stayed at LB from Nov 12-15th 2025, and it was honestly one of the best travel experiences we’ve ever had. The charm of the location and buildings, the huge variety of exotic animals and birds, and the excellent catering all stood out. So did the warm welcome and amazing service from everyone at the lodge and on the Amakhala reserve. The managers and reception staff were responsive and friendly, the kitchen team accommodating, and the guides and drivers made each game drive fun while expertly finding the best viewing spots. This isn’t billed as a 5 star resort, so don’t expect the ultimate in "mod cons". It’s perfect for people who value a more authentic experience. Knowing that it supports a worthwhile cause, re-wilding and maintaining biodiversity in the area, rather than making profits for foreign owners, makes it even more of a pleasure to recommend to everyone we know, and those we haven’t met yet. We met many visitors who said it was the best lodge experience they’d found in S Africa. It was a great privilege to stay at Leeuwenbosch.
