The garden was amazing, but that doesn’t make up for the stay. The room was too small for its furniture, leaving hardly any room to put down and open luggage. My husband is allergic, so the very friendly dogs following us into the room when we arrived was a bit much for us as non-dog people. We were also given a different room from the one we booked, without being asked. The guesthouse is on a main artery, and people passing by were noisy. Breakfast was at a communal, backpacker-style table, which wasn’t what we wanted for a quiet break. After we left, we got a very rude call saying we hadn’t paid and implying we were thieves. Bookings had taken our card details but hadn’t charged us, so we settled the bill immediately by EFT. It was a bizarre encounter, especially given the very high Google review score, and I think other travellers should be able to see this and decide for themselves. I can’t see any reason to return.

Uwe was an attentive host and a German gentleman. His beautiful garden is part of a property he clearly cares about, and he puts that same passion into the community and his guests.

I didn’t stay the night, but after seeing around the inside and outside and walking about, I’d recommend staying here. Barrydale was in bloom, so I took pictures, then ordered tea and cheesecake. The owner was friendly and helpful, the cheesecake was great, and the old English silver tea set, if I’m remembering correctly, made it extra special.

We stayed just one night, though the Little Karoo deserves more time, and Sorgvry would make a great base for exploring. The garden is lovely, and you can relax in the quiet with the sweet dogs. Uwe is the soul of the guesthouse. His love of art and antiques shows in the decorations, the table setting and all the objects around. He gave us a warm welcome and useful tips. Breakfast is served at a magnificent table that brings guests together, with delicious food and bread he makes himself.
