We left within an hour after my two-year-old son fell from the bunk bed. With him and my five-year-old there, the room, which was very small, didn’t feel safe. I hadn’t planned ahead; on January 2nd, driving from Cape Town to Johannesburg, I chose to stop in Bloemfontein for the night, and Sun1 was the closest hotel off the freeway. Reception said a room was available, took my payment, then refused a refund when I came back after seeing the room, saying it was “too late.” We tried staying, but after the fall, leaving felt necessary to protect the children, even though it meant losing the money. If I’d been shown the room first, I wouldn’t have booked it. We would have gone to Southern Sun or City Lodge. I felt deceived because there was no transparency. The R776.69 they took from me won’t make them rich, but it says a lot about how dishonestly they run the business.

The shower was the one good part. The room and toilet space were cramped, the beds were hard and uncomfortable, and the air conditioners didn’t work. It was so hot we left the window open all night, and mosquitoes came in and bit us. People above us were incredibly loud, and the thin walls meant we could hear every time they moved. We barely slept and won’t be back. I really wouldn’t recommend this place.

The place was very clean, and the staff were friendly. But the Wi-Fi was extremely slow, the toilet seat in my room was broken, and the TV was old with only basic channels. Breakfast was advertised, but there wasn’t any during my stay. Staff said the manager was on leave. I also asked for a tax invoice when I paid and was assured I’d get it at checkout. They couldn’t provide one then either, explaining that the manager had to clear the system first. When the manager is away, staff seem to struggle with basic tasks.

A handy place to stop while travelling. The rooms could have been cleaner, but they were fine for a night’s sleep. The grab-and-go breakfast was excellent value and really good.

The room was tidy, the linen fresh, and both the air conditioning and TV worked. The screen was so dark that watching TV was difficult, though. Coffee or tea was provided.
