The mold in the bathroom was the main reason we left early. My wife is undergoing chemotherapy and is especially vulnerable to infections, so seeing it, as also shown in the listing photo, was worrying. We paid a lot for the stay and asked Tracy about leaving. She said checking out was fine and told us to request a refund through Airbnb. We left at 10 a.m. Saturday, after only about nine hours, and only asked for the unused night back. We chose the place because of the view on Airbnb and were in Cape Town for a wedding about 20 minutes away, so we had little time to explore. On Saturday morning we noticed the mold, worn-looking furniture, and uneven, poor paint on some cabinets. We didn't get a chance to see much else of the property. Juanita, the Airbnb host, was not involved until we asked for a refund after the weekend. She later said the problems could have been fixed or another property offered, but neither option was offered to us at the time. Tracy had told us it was okay to leave and to deal with Airbnb. When I spoke directly with Juanita, she denied the refund despite what her employee had said. Airbnb has also tried repeatedly to get the refund, and Juanita has continued to refuse. The issues should have been dealt with before check-in. I’m giving one star because we weren’t helped, offered another place, or given a chance for the problems to be fixed. We just had to navigate the refund request ourselves. We wanted fair treatment, and that seems to be where things broke down. I’d urge future guests to be cautious, as we experienced little care or responsiveness.
