Gordons Guesthouse

This is more feedback than a bad rating. The owner is lovely and very helpful, but I think the cleaning team lets him down. Our room had cobwebs and a strong musty smell, as if the windows hadn't been opened in ages. There was coffee, tea, and sugar, but no milk. The beautiful French doors opened onto a view of someone else's room, and the blinds wouldn't stay open. It took ages for the shower water to heat, and I ended up with two cold showers. The bathroom is beautiful but isn't en suite, so you have to dash back to your room to change. There was no plug for the bathtub, and the modern open shower left water all over the floor. Breakfast isn't on site, either, you have to walk down the road to a bistro. The main thing that made me uneasy was not being able to lock the room door from inside at night. It wasn't about the owner, just the safety concern. These are opportunities to improve, not meant as a negative review.

Gordon is welcoming and very friendly. My room was clean and quiet, and the location worked well for me, with the VA waterfront and a good range of bars and restaurants within walking distance.

I spent two weeks at Gordon’s Guesthouse and was very comfortable there. Gordon is a great host, and the room was clean. The location is excellent. I'd gladly stay again and recommend it.

The place fell short of its advertised standards. I found an acrylic nail in the shower, there were no towels or toilet paper, and the promised complimentary drinks facilities were missing. Some bathrooms weren't en suite as advertised, and rooms were entered without permission. The owner lives in the guest house and didn't deal with guests professionally. Classical music blared through the house, and when we raised complaints or questions, nothing was resolved. The response was to defend what had happened instead of fixing it.
