House On The Hill

Deon made our first visit to Cape Town so pleasant. He went out of his way with information and directions for the places we wanted to see, and we were lucky enough to hear him play guitar and sing. He has a beautiful, distinctive voice. The seven days we spent at House On The Hill were in a safe, peaceful area, within walking distance of the waterfront and restaurants. Our room was spacious, clean, nicely decorated, and had a private bathroom, bar fridge, kettle, hairdryer, and a few other items. Thanks so much, Deon.

The location is a real plus, about a 10 minute walk to the waterfront, with taxis (public vans) just down the road. But this is a very basic backpackers, and the facilities and service were average. Cleanliness was the main issue for us. During our six nights, the bathroom was only properly cleaned once, and the room service could be much better for a place that calls itself an upmarket backpackers. The advertised TV had only one working channel. The tea station seemed neglected too, with expired coffee and awful-tasting tea. We wanted to have a braai in the courtyard, but changed our plans when we saw the grill and realized it needed cleaning before use. A new coffee plunger might help as well: one was broken, so guests in several rooms had to share the other, which caused friction. Overall, it was an OK stay.

The bedding was great, and the simple decor was spotless. It’s a peaceful area, with Giovanni’s and plenty of restaurants within walking distance. Parking outside overnight was easy too. Best value I found in all of Cape Town.

Claudi, the owner from Germany, was very helpful, and communication was quick and easy. This is a lovely little guest house in a quiet, safe location. The rooms are clean, bright, and individually equipped with what you need. Breakfast had gorgeous fresh items, including real bread and rolls, fruit, and muesli. The bathroom in room no 5 is rather small. Strongly recommend.
