There was no soap in the bathrooms, the tablecloths had stains, and the cutlery looked as if it had been used for the previous meal. The receptionist was also the cook, and she didn't ask how I wanted my food. The sausage and bacon were very... The receptionist wasn't visible when I arrived, and she wore the same clothes two days running. It might have been their uniform, but it didn't look like it. The place has a 3-star rating, but the service wasn't 3-star. One night was one night too many. NEVER AGAIN, sorry.

I first visited in 1991, and a lot has changed since Thys left. I tried to return a few weeks ago, but the tall manager/owner doesn't understand the value of regulars. When I went to pay, he didn't know how to use the machine and just added 10%. I have a policy of not tipping owners or managers. I've spent 10's of 1000 of Rands there, and I won't go back. Most of my fellow regulars agree.

This place is run down, quite honestly a hovel. We booked a twin room for one night, but were given a single room with a stale, musty smell. I questioned it at check-in and was told that was the room allocated to us. After lunch at a winefarm, we decided we'd rather drive home than spend a night at the lodge.

Windhoek on tap at the pub was fantastic after a long trip. Our room was a great size, and the shower was massive. We were glad there was a fan for the hot evening, too. The lodge has a certain charm, with tasteful decor, and it's very central while still being nicely set back from the main.

It feels like a call back from the past, with the same friendly regulars meeting every day. It's very different, but friendly, and I suppose it feels like home away from home for the regulars. You need to be a smoker or not mind the smoke, since sitting outside is your only other option.
