I was in Durban for work and stayed at Bayside, where the condition of my room made for a really disappointing visit. Bayside 108: Unit 116 had black mold on the bathroom ceiling, with a bad smell, and it had spread onto the bedroom walls too. Opening the window brought in overwhelming traffic noise, like the room was right on the street. The microwave was dirty, the kettle seemed questionable, and the air conditioning didn’t work, so the room was uncomfortable. There’s a Wimpy restaurant on-site, but no room service and not much variety. The CBD felt crowded and unsafe, and the hotel layout was confusing. Reception staff seemed relaxed, but offered little service or support. Bayside needs serious work on cleanliness, maintenance, and the guest experience. I can’t recommend it in its current state.

Customer service was good, and the rooms were clean, so my stay was pleasant. The doors didn’t lock properly, though, and there weren’t enough types of charging ports. With my 3-pin plugs, I struggled to charge both my laptop and phone.

Bayside is clean and nice, and worth staying at for a weekend or a month. The location isn’t so good, though.

The hospitality was great, and Bayside Hotel 108 was very clean. But during our holiday, while we were ordering at the counter in the Wimpy downstairs, someone pickpocketed my phone from my pocket. It overshadowed the rest of the trip and left me concerned about safety. After that experience, I don’t think I’ll visit again.

The staff are friendly, and Bongi, or Bongiwe, was especially lovely 👌💖. This was my second visit. I booked an ordinary room the first time, then a self-catering room this time, and my partner and I are so in love with it. We don’t regret staying here, and it’ll probably be my usual place next time I’m in Durban. I’m planning to bring my toddler, and hope she loves it too. I was happy with my stay overall. I just wish they had stoppers or props for the sink, since washing dishes under a running tap isn’t right.
