I’d stayed at Durban Spar Hotel once before and had a really good time, so this second visit was a huge letdown. We were in room 501 on the fifth floor, and the hotel seemed badly neglected, with lots of maintenance still needed. Cockroaches were everywhere, from tiny ones to large ones, even on the white bed sheets and in the kitchen. We could hardly eat in the room, and I was worried about putting my health at risk because of this neglect, even though I do like the hotel. The reception staff were friendly and helpful. On our first night I bought a large tin of Doom, which was empty by that same evening. The next day I asked reception for one and got a small tin; that was used up by the end of the day too. What made this more upsetting was that complaints about the cockroaches had been acknowledged in reviews seven months earlier, but apparently nothing had been done. Please deal with the problem and show guests that they matter, or you’ll lose a lot of customers.

The resort’s self-catering rooms have kitchens, air conditioning, and enough space for couples, families, or bigger groups. Many guests seem to enjoy the location, comfort, and friendly staff, though some have mentioned dated areas that need work and occasional cleanliness or maintenance problems. Those issues don’t seem to affect everyone, and plenty of people still consider it good value. Set along Durban’s Golden Mile, Durban Spa is right by the Indian Ocean, with beaches, promenades, and nearby attractions easy to reach on foot. Guests can also enjoy sea views, indoor and outdoor pools, and a family-friendly atmosphere. It remains a popular base for a seaside visit, especially for people who care most about the beach location and family amenities.

For what I paid, this stay was nowhere near acceptable. From 2 January to 9 January 2026, I found Durban Spa outdated, poorly maintained, and disappointing. The rooms were cramped and uncomfortable for a whole week, with worn, neglected furniture that looked long overdue for replacement. Nothing felt modern or welcoming, especially at those prices. The hygiene problems were disturbing. Cockroaches ran around the room, the bathroom and toilet had a constant bad smell, and the jacuzzi water looked visibly dirty, so I couldn’t use it. The staff were unfriendly and unhelpful, with none of the hospitality or willingness to assist I expected. I’m extremely unhappy with the experience. The cost was high, but the room and service didn’t meet even basic standards or offer value for money. Management needs to take responsibility and deal with these problems urgently. Until there are major improvements, I wouldn’t recommend Durban Spa, especially at this price.

My husband had a major heart attack on our second day at Durban Spa, then spent another eight days in hospital in Durban. We’re from Johannesburg, and the management team let us stay free of charge. They showed us so much compassion at a time when I was feeling at my worst. I’m truly grateful. Thank you, Durban Spa team, for reminding us that humanity matters so much. Heartfelt thanks to every one of you.

The rooms were comfortable and clean, but it was the views that really lifted our stay. We could see the busy Durban Harbour on one side and the beachfront on the other, with sunrises and soothing sea sounds. Waking up to both was a lovely bonus. There’s plenty to do around the resort too. The beauty spa was a nice place to unwind, the heated pool was great on cooler days and evenings, and the games room gave both adults and kids something fun to enjoy. We also loved the roomy outdoor deck and the fresh coastal air. Durban Spa Resort is handy for the promenade, beaches, and nearby attractions. There’s a lot here for a family trip, a couples’ break, or just a relaxing weekend. It’s a comfortable, good value place with memorable scenery, and a lovely way to enjoy Durban.
